This hospitality degree programme is designed to provide a strongly vocational theme relevant for a wide range of employment sectors in the hospitality industry. Hospitality embraces a wide range of sectors including: contract catering, hotels, leisure (such as theatres and casinos), licensed retail (pubs and clubs), restaurants and welfare catering. Hospitality continues to be one of the largest growth industries. Its successful management depends on high quality business skills and the ability to provide consumer satisfaction. This programme aims to equip students with appropriate knowledge and understanding of hospitality and to develop their skills needed for employment or further study.

Plymouth University, which celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2012, is one of the UK’s most prominent and dynamic universities with an educational history dating back to 1862. Plymouth University is ranked 47th in The Guardian League Table 2012 UK universities ranking and has consistently been ranked as one of the top three modern universities. Plymouth has 7 faculties, with about 3,000 staff and over 30,000 students.

Plymouth University has recently been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in recognition of its world-class marine and maritime research, teaching and training. This is a highly prestigious prize, which is granted biennially to universities and colleges that demonstrate work of a world-class standard of excellence.

Plymouth has a long record of high quality innovative research as demonstrated by its achievements in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Plymouth submitted 25 Units of Assessment in the 2008 RAE round. The results show that the majority of research submitted by the university included world-leading research, achieving the highest rating possible - scoring 4-stars. Overall, 80% of the research was judged as being of international repute.

Plymouth University is ranked 7th among the UK universities for teaching in Tourism, Transport and Travel in 2012. High quality teaching, informed by staff research, contributes to tourism and hospitality group’s excellent rating, a score of 23 out of 24, given by the Quality Assurance Agency.
