Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Heritage Management(CHM)

From the time that the Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Heritage Management was launched in early 2005, it was already recognised that Asia’s rich and diverse cultural heritage resources deserve much higher attention and care from society. These are increasingly under threat from rapid development, urbanisation, environmental degradation, insensitive tourism and vandalism.

Global trends already expand the concept of Cultural Heritage to beyond the conventional limits of historic monumental architecture and artefacts, but to embrace vernacular environment, movable objects and intangible resources. These resources embrace both tangible resources like built heritage, artistic products, historic artefacts, and cultural landscapes, and also intangible resources like customs, beliefs, rituals, languages, art-forms, craftsmanship’s and practices.

With a growing awareness of these threats to the unique cultural heritage spectrum of this region, better management of cultural heritage resources is being seen as vital for its successful protection.

The HKU SPACE Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Heritage Management takes a broad embracing view of cultural heritage management and addresses the specific issues and problems of Asia. The Programme, through a series of Specialist Topics Orientated Modules, systematically explores current and emerging issues related to understanding and managing Asia’s cultural heritage resources. Teaching and learning activities consist of lectures, discussions, workshops and field studies.
