With the West Kowloon Cultural District due for completion by the end of the decade, the cultural and creative industries will soon be offering many new career prospects.
According to the June 2016 edition of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics, the number of people engaged in these industries has been on the rise for the past ten years. As the city’s cultural offerings grows, you may want to be more than a member of the audience, but become a producer, performer, creator, or artistic manager yourself.
The performing arts, by the government’s own definition, covers a wide range of activities from music to dance, theatre groups to stage designers, and composers to writers. However, these disciplines may in fact be the smallest components of the blossoming creative industry. To meet the city’s future demand for cultural talent, the government is also providing financial support for all kinds of artistic endeavours from an additional HK$20 million for the Film Development Fund in the 2016 budget to turning more heritage sites such as the former Police Married Quarters (PMQ) into creative hubs for local artists and designers.
HKU SPACE has been providing short courses and programmes for the performing arts and arts management to help people engage and advance in the cultural and creative industries. A Seminar Series on the Performing Arts invites veterans from the cultural and creative industries to share their experiences and give participants a glimpse of the different forms of artistic expression.
