Stay Resilient and Motivated amid COVID-19
Even though the epidemic in Hong Kong appears to be receding, the economy and the outlook still remain challenging going ahead. Therefore, what can wage earners do about the threats and stress of salary reductions, unpaid leave, and even layoffs?
Long ago, Mencius, a Chinese Confucian philosopher, shared his thoughts on adversity, “When heaven is about to confer a great responsibility on a man, it will first fill his heart with suffering, toil his sinews and bones…” Mencius was pointing out his belief that people who succeed will first have to refine and polish themselves, both physically and spiritually, before making a breakthrough.
This epidemic has led us all through many ups and downs, so why not take this time as an opportunity for self-reflection and self-improvement? For example, you could discover some new interests; like interior design or enhance your English PR writing skills and maybe become a freelance writer. Or you could jump way out of your comfort zone and become a “Slashie”. Perhaps you fancy being a data analyst, or a photographer, a programmer, a sports coach, a counsellor, or maybe all of them at the same time. Because, in the post-COVID world, the more skills you can draw on, the better your outlook is going to be.
But one thing to remember is that no matter what adversities we face, we all write the stories of our own lives. A first step could be tuning in to our School’s “Level Up” Series of online talks starting on 23 May. Perhaps you will be inspired by the first speaker, Ms Akina Fong Kin-yee, the renowned media and public relations expert? She will share her experiences of getting through the crisis and offer tips on how you can turn challenges into opportunities and get started on a new chapter of your story.
