Course Description

At intermediate level, the Certificate in General English course is one of the courses under the SPACE General English Programme which helps learners develop all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.   

The SPACE General English Programme consists of six-level general English courses with each of the levels becoming progressively more difficult: 

Foundation Course in General English (Intake: January 2013)
Introductory Certificate in General English
(Intake: January 2013) or
Introductory Certificate in English Language Skills
(Intake: March 2013)
Intermediate Certificate in General English
(Intake: January 2013) or
Intermediate Certificate in English Language Skills
(March 2013)
Certificate in General English
(Intake: January 2013)
Advanced Certificate in General English
 (Intake: October 2013)
Diploma in General English
(Intake: October 2013)

All the above courses have their own entry requirements.  Applicants who do not meet the stated entry requirements have to take the SPACE English Course Entrance Examination to determine the most appropriate level they should enter.

Apart from the lowest level, each level leads to its own HKU SPACE award.  The Foundation Course in General English leads to a Statement of Achievement.

Entry to the Course

All courses offered have their own entry requirements.

Applicants who do not meet the stated entry requirements have to take a 90-minute SPACE English Course Entrance Examination.

A non-refundable fee of $120 is required for taking this test. Applicants for the test should fill out the special application form for The SPACE English Course Entrance Examination to take the exam on a date that suits them. We will send out letters offering places after the exam sessions in good time for course enrolment. Applicants who take an early exam will have a better chance of getting a place at a centre and time of their choice. Applicants who take a later exam will have a limited choice of classes. Applicants who take the SPACE English Course Entrance Examination after mid-January 2013 will not get Early Bird Discounts on course fees.

There is no guarantee that everyone who takes the SPACE English Course Entrance Examination will be offered a place in any of the levels of the SPACE English Course. Candidates whose performance indicates that they are below the entry requirements may be advised to take a lower level course before continuing with the course being applied for at HKU SPACE.

Teaching Staff

Instructors of the course are drawn from our panel of qualified and experienced English language teachers. Some of them are native speakers; some of them are local teachers with native speaker competence.

Notes to Applicants

  • Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
  • Unless changes are made to the advertised details, we do not usually issue joining instructions. If your application has been accepted, you should go to the first session of the class at the time and place shown.
  • No refunds or transfers to a different class will be approved.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall:

1.  hold an Intermediate Certificate in General English or Intermediate Certificate in English Language Skills awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE; or

2.  have gained in the HKCEE Grade D (Syllabus B) or Grade B (Syllabus A) in English Language prior to 2007 or Level 3 in HKCEE English Language from 2007 or Level 3 in HKDSE English Language,  and a certificate showing successful completion of an English Language course of at least 30 hours

Applicants with equivalent qualifications will be considered on individual merit.

Applicants may be required to take a test in English.

Please attach a copy of relevant letters or your HKCEE/HKDSE certificate to your application.

Applicants who do not meet the above requirements or are unable to produce documentary proof(s) need to take The SPACE English Course Entrance Examination

Continuing Education Fund

The Certificate in General English programme is registered with the Office of the Continuing Education Fund (OCEF) as a CEF reimbursable course. To qualify for CEF reimbursement, you must pass the course and must register with the OCEF before taking the course.

Eligible applicants can claim a refund of 80% of their fees, up to a maximum of $10,000.

To be eligible for CEF reimbursement, students must: 

  • register with The Office of the Continuing Education Fund before the start of the class;
  • fulfil the 70% attendance requirement;
  • pass the course successfully;
  • pass the external English benchmark test (eg BULATS) at the require proficiency level
