Diploma in Business English

Course Description

 This programme develops competency in concise writing, effective meeting and negotiation skills.

To be awarded Diploma in Business English, students have to complete FOUR modules (TWO at Certificate Level and TWO [ANY TWO out of FOUR modules] at Diploma Level).

Module 1:  Modern Business Writing Skills
Module 2:  Modern Business Oral Skills

Diploma Level

Module 3:  Professional Written Communication Skills
Module 4:  Report Writing and Presentation Skills
Module 5:  International Business Communication Skills
Module 6:  Professional Business English Through Case Studies

Applicants should check the entry requirements for both Certificate and Diploma in Business English levels. Those with evidence of English proficiency equivalent to Certificate in Business English may be waived from taking Modules 1 and 2.  Some applicants may be required to take a written test, as appropriate.

After the attainment of Diploma/Advanced Diploma level in Business English, some students continue to learn and enhance their language proficiency by switching to our General English programme.  Visit our advanced level general English pages for more information:

Business English Entry Test

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements or are unable to produce documentary proof(s) need to take the SPACE Business English Course Entry Test. There is a non-refundable charge of $200 for this 90-minute written test. Based on the test results, applicants will be placed in a Business English programme most suited to their levels.

The test results will be released in good time after the test to enable successful applicants to enrol for the module(s) of their choice. The test schedules for this intake are:

Teaching Staff

Instructors of the course are drawn from our panel of qualified and experienced English language teachers. Some of them are native speakers; others are local teachers with native speaker competence.

Note to Applicants

The Advanced Diploma / Diploma in Business English programme is a module-based programme, offering flexibility to learners.  Students will be awarded Advanced Diploma / Diploma depending on the number of modules successfully completed (See Awards).

Only programmes (but not individual modules) are reimbursable under the CEF scheme. Students have to successfully complete at least 2 courses in the Advanced Diploma / Diploma in Business English programmes to be eligible to CEF reimbursement.

  • Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
  • Unless changes are made to the advertised details, we do not usually issue joining instructions. If your application has been accepted, you should go to the first session of the class at the time and place shown.
  • No refunds or transfers to a different class will be approved.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall:
 

  1. hold a Diploma in Business English, or Diploma or Advanced Certificate in General English with Merit (Credit) or above awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE; or
  2. have gained in the HKDSE Examination Level 4 or above in English Language; or
  3. have obtained Level 4 or above in English Language in HKCEE (Syllabus B) or Grade D or above in AS Use of English in the HKALE.  

Equivalent qualifications will be considered on individual merits.

  • Applicants may be required to take a written test in English.
  • Applicants with evidence of English proficiency equivalent to Certificate in Business English with Merit (Credit) or above awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE may be exempted from Module 1 (Modern Business Writing Skills) and Module 2 (Modern Business Oral Skills).

Course Fee

  • HK$5,600 per module (Regular for modules at diploma level)
  • HK$5,400 per module (Early-Bird discounted for enrolment on/before 8 March 2014)
  • HK$3,800 per module (Regular for modules at certificate level)
  • HK$3,650 per module (Early-Bird discounted for enrolment on/before 8 March 2014)

Continuing Education Fund

The Diploma in Business English programme is registered with the Office of the Continuing Education Fund (OCEF) as a CEF reimbursable course. To qualify for CEF reimbursement, you must pass the course and must register with the OCEF before taking the course.

Eligible applicants can claim a refund of 80% of their fees, up to a maximum of $10,000.

To be eligible for CEF reimbursement, applicants must:  

  • register with The Office of the Continuing Education Fund before the start of the course;
  • successfully complete two courses of the programme
  • pass a recognised English language examination, the BULATS Test, at the required proficiency level
