Course Description

This programme develops competency in concise writing, effective meeting and negotiation skills.

Completion of Modules 1 and 2 leads to Certificate in Business English
Completion of Modules 1 and 2 and any two of Modules 3 - 6 leads to Diploma in Business English*
Completion of Modules 1 - 6 leads to Advanced Diploma in Business English*

Students can take these modules as individual standalone courses with no commitment to complete the whole programme.

*Applicants with evidence of English proficiency equivalent to Certificate in Business English awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE may be exempted from Module 1 (Modern Business Writing Skills) and Module 2 (Modern Business Oral Skills).

Teaching Staff

Instructors of the course are drawn from our panel of qualified and experienced English language teachers. Some of them are native speakers; others are local teachers with native speaker competence.

Note to Applicants

The Advanced Diploma / Diploma in Business English programme is a module-based programme, offering flexibility to learners.  Students will be awarded Advanced Diploma / Diploma depending on the number of modules successfully completed (See Awards).

Only programmes (but not individual modules) are reimbursable under the CEF scheme. Students have to successfully complete at least 2 courses in the Advanced Diploma / Diploma in Business English programmes to be eligible to CEF reimbursement.

  • Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
  • Unless changes are made to the advertised details, we do not usually issue joining instructions. If your application has been accepted, you should go to the first session of the class at the time and place shown.
  • No refunds or transfers to a different class will be approved.

Entry Requirements

pplicants shall:
 

1.      hold a  Diploma or Certificate in General English (Advanced) awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE; or

2.      have gained in the HKDSE Examination Level 4 in English Language; or

3.      have obtained in the HKCEE Grade C (Syllabus B) or Grade A (Syllabus A) in English Language prior to 2007 or Level 4 in English Language from 2007; or

4.      have obtained in the HKALE Grade D in AS Use of English. 
 

Equivalent qualifications will be considered on individual merit.

Applicants with evidence of English proficiency equivalent to Certificate in Business English awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE may be exempted from Module 1 (Modern Business Writing Skills) and Module 2 (Modern Business Oral Skills). 

Applicants may be required to take a written test in English. See Business English Entry Test Schedules below.

Continuing Education Fund

The Diploma in Business English programme is registered with the Office of the Continuing Education Fund (OCEF) as a CEF reimbursable course. To qualify for CEF reimbursement, you must pass the course and must register with the OCEF before taking the course.

Eligible applicants can claim a refund of 80% of their fees, up to a maximum of $10,000.

To be eligible for CEF reimbursement, applicants must:  

  • register with The Office of the Continuing Education Fund before the start of the course;
  • successfully complete two courses of the programme
  • pass a recognised English language examination, the BULATS Test, at the required proficiency level
