Highlights

This 30-hour course uses training in practical debating techniques to give students the skills needed to persuade others. This ability can be used to gain advantage either at work or in social situations. Debate motions will be based on a wide range of current social issues, including some fun topics.

Note:
All applicants who are below age 18  MUST complete and submit the 'Parent/Guardian Consent Form’ together with the Enrollment Form

You will enhance your English negotiating skills through participation in lectures and “mock” debating practices. The following is a list of typical course topics, activities and assignments:

  • Debate overview and structure of key sections
  • Debating alley game
  • Preparation of 3-min speech
  • Assignments: practise and polish speech
  • Teacher feedback on assignments and review
  • Whole class debates with feedback
  • Further practice rotating speaker roles

Lessons are well supported by short 3-min video clips from secondary school debates related to the topics which the students have just debated in class.

Feedback and comparisons are offered in a fun and constructive way.

Additional focus points include the teaching of:

  • Selecting the right evidence to negotiate better
  • Using evidence more convincingly
  • Making rebuttals more effective
  • Getting the right balance between rebuttals and own team content

In addition to improving your negotiating skills at work or in your studies, this course will allow you to be more persuasive in social situations.

*  Course participants can also observe a live grand final debate on a topic which they’ve already debated in class, watching quality secondary school teams compete for trophies and listen to feedback from top external adjudicators as an additional activity, OR subject to venue availability, course participants can practise debating in the lecture theatre a SPACE Learning Centre.
