This programme provides students with a comprehensive study in gastroenterology nursing using an evidence-based and primary health approach. Upon completion of this programme, students will be able to take up a leadership role to practise competently and effectively in the specialty areas of clinical endoscopy and gastroenterology nursing in the hospitals and in the community.

The programme had been endorsed by the Institute of Advanced Nursing Studies (IANS) of the Hospital Authority and registered on the Hong Kong Qualifications Register (HKQR).

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme, students will be able to:

  1. Conduct nursing assessments based on advanced knowledge and skills in Endoscopy centre and Clinical Gastroenterology;
  2. Evaluate different therapeutic management approaches in meeting the needs of the patients and their families;
  3. Practice as a competent member in a multidisciplinary health care team working in Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Nursing/units;
  4. Apply comprehensive, quality nursing care incorporating specialized knowledge and skills to enhance and maintain the optimal health of patients;
  5. Develop an evidence-based health promotion project for patient and family caregivers on the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle; and
  6. Apply relevant and sound evidence from the literature in leading Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Nursing practice and studies.

Award

Upon successful completion of:

  1. Module 1, the students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Endoscopy Nursing.
  2. Module 1 and 2, the students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Gastroenterology Nursing.
  3. Module 3, a Statement of Achievement will be awarded to the student if the student will not complete the other modules of the programme.
  4. All 4 modules, the students will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Gastroenterology Nursing.

Module 1: Advanced Practice in Endoscopy Nursing

Introduction

This programme aims to provide registered nurses advanced knowledge and skills in Endoscopy Nursing. Upon completion of this programme, students will be able to practice competently and effectively in the Endoscopy units in the hospitals and in the community

Learning  Outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Conduct nursing assessments based on advanced knowledge and skills in related to Endoscopy Nursing;
  2. Evaluate different therapeutic management approaches in meeting the needs of patients receiving endoscopic procedures before, during and after;
  3. Practice as a competent member in a multidisciplinary health care team in Endoscopy Nursing/units;
  4. Apply comprehensive, quality nursing care incorporating specialized knowledge and skills to enhance and maintain the optimal health of patients.
Assessment
  1. Students are expected to have 70% attendance for the theoretical components and 100% attendance for the clinical placement
  2. Clinical Placement
  3. Seminar Presentation
  4. Written Assignment
  5. Written Examination.
 
Award


Student who has successfully completed will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Endoscopy Nursing and may proceed to Module 2.

Module 2: Advanced Practice in Gastroenterology Nursing

Introduction

This module aims to provide registered nurses advanced knowledge and skills in Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Nursing. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to practise competently and effectively in the specialty areas of Clinical Gastroenterology based on evidence-based practice in the hospitals and in the community.

Learning  Outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Conduct nursing assessments based on advanced knowledge and skills in clinical gastroenterology;
  2. Evaluate different therapeutic management approaches in meeting the needs of the patients and their families;
  3. Practice as a competent member in a multidisciplinary health care team working in Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Nursing/units;
  4. Apply comprehensive, quality nursing care incorporating specialized knowledge and skills to enhance and maintain the optimal health of patients;
  5. Develop an evidence-based health promotion project for patient and family caregivers on the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.
Assessment
  1. Students are expected to have 70% attendance for the theoretical components and 100% attendance for the clinical placement

Award

Student who has successfully completed Module 1 and 2 will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Gastroenterology Nursing and may proceed to Module 3 and 4.

Module 3: Evidence-based Practice in Gastroenterology Nursing

Module 4: Professional Development in Gastroenterology Nursing

Introduction

The 2 Modules aims to provide registered nurses advanced knowledge and skills in Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Nursing. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to practice competently and effectively managing in Endoscopy and Gastroenterology units and leading evidence-based practice especially in appraising current research studies in Gastroenterology.

 
Learning Outcome

Module 3

On completion of the course, students should be able to: 

  1. Evaluate different approaches to the research process;
  2. Critically review the common research approaches, outcomes and values in Gastroenterology applications;
  3. Analyze issues in matching research questions to an appropriate research method in Gastroenterology;
  4. Evaluate evidence-based practice in local Gastroenterology settings; and
  5. Conduct a literature review on an evidence-based intervention of a Gastroenterology condition.

Module 4

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Discuss and evaluate different theories and models in professional leadership in health care;
  2. Analyze the career pathway and essential competency for professionalism in Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Nursing/units;
  3. Perform competently as a case manager in handling critical clinical situations encountered in Endoscopy and Gastroenterology Nursing/units;
  4. Practice as a role model in negotiation, critical thinking and problem-solving in Gastroenterology settings.
Assessment
  1. Students are expected to have 70% attendance for the theoretical components
  2. Group Presentation
  3. Written Assignment
  4. Workshop (for Module 4 only)
Award

Student who has successfully completed Modules 1 - 4, will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in  Gastroenterology Nursing.

Please return the completed application form together with the appropriate fee in the form of a crossed cheque made payable to HKU SPACE to Nursing Studies and Health Care, HKU SPACE, 13/F, Fortress Tower, 250 King’s Road, North Point, Hong Kong

1. Cash or EPS

Course fees can be paid by cash or EPS at any HKU SPACE enrolment counters.

2. Cheque or bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify theprogramme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/MasterCard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard, including the “HKU SPACE MasterCard”, at anyHKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-freeinstalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online payment

The course fees of all open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes can be settled by using PPS via the Internet. Applicants may also pay the relevant course fees by VISA or MasterCard online. Please refer to the Online Services page on the School website.

Notes

  1. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or MasterCard if the course is to start shortly.

  2. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder’s credit card account.

  3. In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  4. Fees and places on courses cannot be transferred from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on approved transfers.
  5. Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  6. For additional copies of receipts, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with a completed form and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to ‘HKU SPACE’. Such copies will only normally be issued at the end of a course.
