This is the first green building programme integrated with vital green management topics offered at postgraduate level in Hong Kong. It is designed for students who aspire to acquire green building knowledge in tackling green building design considerations required in building related project. It is also suitable for students who want to pave the path to become green building professionals. This programme also equips students with the knowledge of carbon management, environmental policy and auditing issues for understanding essential green initiates for building related practitioners.

This programme will be served as one of the ways for building-related practitioners to become a green building professional in Hong Kong.

Programme Features

  • Graduates of this Programme are able to have direct articulation to the MSc Social Responsibility and Sustainability offered by the Aston University, UK. Graduates only study 4 more courses through distance learning plus a dissertation to complete the master degree programme
  • The course contents include knowledge, best practices and case study related to green building for helping students in understanding varioius major aspects inlcuded in the Building Environmental Assessment Method Professionals (BEAM Pro) examination developed by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and the BEAM Society and also the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) examinations developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
  • The Programme includes modules that can provide green building cases and field trips for assisting students’ learning.

  • Ir C F Lam

Ir Lam is a professional environmental and civil engineer with over 25 years of experience in a broad spectrum of infrastructural engineering, environmental management and pollution control projects.  

Ir Lam’s practice includes environmental policy formulation; engineering project management and financing; engineering contract administration; design and construction of sewage collection and treatment systems; source reduction, recycling, collection, treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste and chemical waste; air and noise pollution mitigation; environmental impact assessment; environmental monitoring and auditing; green procurement; corporate environmental management; environmental permitting and licensing; legislative enforcement and prosecution; water quality policy and monitoring; and professional training.

Ir Lam is currently the Council Member, Ex-officio Member of the Environmental Division and Member of the Environmental Discipline Advisory Panel of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He is also the Past Chairman of the Hong Kong Waste Management Association.

  • Dr Ruffinaa Thilakaratne

Dr Ruffinaa Thilakaratne is a RIBA qualified architect, LEED Accredited Professional, HK BEAM Plus Professional and a PhD holder with 15 yrs. international experience. She possesses extensive experience in architectural practice, research & teaching.

With her profound knowledge in architecture and sustainability disciplines she is currently involved with a number of tertiary education institutions in Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand and the US teaching undergraduate students and providing green building training for industry professionals.

In her present role as the Director of Sustainability at GRID Consortium, she is involved in green building rating management consultancy under LEED and BEAM Plus rating schemes, developing green specifications, reviewing and providing expertise for government bids for Hong Kong projects and conducting green professional training in Asia. As a qualified architect, she is currently providing sustainability and design consultancy for many high-end property developers in Hong Kong and Asia and also for other corporate entities and institutions on their commercial, institutional and master planning projects.

Her core expertise are in the areas green building rating systems, environmental performance modeling, green material and architectural specifications and design intelligence. She is also a design architect specialized in science, technology & education projects, mixed use transit oriented developments, hospitality and housing.

She is well acquainted with IBC, BS and ASD building codes and regulations, ISO 14000 and environmental standards and LEED and BEAM Plus green building rating systems.

Her interest in sustainability extends through her active involvement in USGBC Education Review Committee, USGBC China Chapter RPC Committee, BEAM Society Professional Development Committee and SwedCham Environmental Committee.

  • Dr Ng Min Yee, Candy

Dr Candy Ng has been awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Building Services Engineering from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She is the BEAM Professional and Certified Carbon Audit Professional and an expert in both the Energy Management and Fire Engineering. She applies computational fluid dynamics techniques to study many practical problems, including building energy efficiency and smoke generation in case of fire. Candy is keen on carrying out the qualitative and quantitative analysis in fire engineering and building energy problems.

Applicants should

1. hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering, architectural or science disciplines awarded by a recognised university or equivalent; AND

2. provide evidence of English proficiency (if the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English) such as:

2.1 an overall band of 6.0 with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS;

2.2 a score of 550 in the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 213 in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 in the internet-based TOEFL;

2.3 HKALE Use of English at Grade E;

2.4 equivalent qualifications.

Applicants with other qualifications will be considered on individual merit.

Enrolment Method

Payment Method
1. Cash or EPS

Course fees can be paid by cash or EPS at any HKU SPACE enrolment counters.

2. Cheque or bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify theprogramme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/MasterCard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard, including the “HKU SPACE MasterCard”, at anyHKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-freeinstalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online payment

The course fees of all open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes can be settled by using PPS via the Internet. Applicants may also pay the relevant course fees by VISA or MasterCard online. Please refer to the Online Services page on the School website.

Notes

  1. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or MasterCard if the course is to start shortly.

  2. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder’s credit card account.

  3. In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  4. Fees and places on courses cannot be transferred from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on approved transfers.
  5. Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  6. For additional copies of receipts, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with a completed form and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to ‘HKU SPACE’. Such copies will only normally be issued at the end of a course.
