Life, Biomedical & Medical Laboratory Sciences

The School offers a variety of programmes focused on professional training and continuing education in the fields of medical laboratory science, life sciences, microbiology testing and laboratory management.

Programmes range from introductory level courses to degree and master’s levels, with a majority containing a laboratory or practical component. This unique practical element distinguishes us from self-financed continuing education (CE) programmes offered by other institutions in Hong Kong, which rarely offer such part-time laboratory-based courses. It’s for this reason that HKU SPACE is a major provider of professional biomedical part-time training.

Among our longest-running programmes is the Higher Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science. Since the 1970s, this part-time Higher Certificate has, as one of the few local qualifications recognised for registration by the Hong Kong Medical Technologists Board, provided an important educational route for graduates from other specialties to enter the field of medical laboratory science in Hong Kong. Over the past three decades, we have trained more than a thousand medical laboratory technologists to serve in public and private hospitals and universities.

Many of our graduates are committed to continuing their professional development and lifelong learning by pursuing advanced studies at the master’s level. The Master of Science in Biomedical Science, offered jointly by HKU SPACE and Edinburgh Napier University, is the Master’s programme of choice for graduates seeking to become laboratory directors and managers.

All programmes are taught by active and dedicated practitioners in the relevant disciplines to ensure the high standard of professional education.
