Prof Lung-sang Chan graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor degree in Geography in 1978, and received his Master’s degree and Doctoral degree in Geology from the University of California-Berkeley in the 1980’s.
Before taking up the College Principal position, he was a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences in HKU, Coordinator of Earth Sciences Major and Geology Major, and Programme Director of MSc in Applied Geosciences, HKU. He also holds various Adjunct and Visiting Professor positions in China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Institute of Geological Sciences, and Chengdu University of Technology in China. Before coming back to Hong Kong, he taught in the Department of Geology at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Prof Chan also involves in a number of public services. He is the Director of Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, Member of the Advisory Committee on Resources and Quality of Water Supply, Stake-holders Advisory Group for CLP Wind Farm Project, UGC outcome-based Approach Task Force and Working Group on Liberal Studies IES Curriculum of EDB, HKSAR. He is also a Science Advisor of the Hong Kong Observatory and an Ex-officio of the Geological Society of Hong Kong.
He published extensively in SCI journals and delivered seminars and talks in the academia as well as to the general public. His research interests include the tectonics and geology of South China, environmental magnetism, geophysics and development of innovative geophysical techniques to geological and urban studies.
