Students will practise speaking skills, expressing opinions on culture, sport, food & drink, current affairs, local events, holidays & the world today. They will read texts, comment in speaking & writing and listen to songs & recordings of native speakers. By the end of the programme, students should be able to talk with fluency about everyday topics, write simple texts on topics of familiar interest, follow the main ideas when listening to clear speech or reading simple texts. Applicants shall have: (a) i) obtained the Certificate in Spanish (Upper Intermediate), awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE; or ii) studied approximately 350-370 contact hours of Spanish at a different institution and (b) sufficient English proficiency to follow simple explanations in English. Other applicants may be interviewed if necessary to confirm their suitability for the programme, e.g. if they have studied a similar number of hours elsewhere or have alternative experience learning the language, such as a study visit to the country. In the absence of the evidence listed in (a), students should contact HKU SPACE by 1 March 2023 for further information. No.: 14/003665/L2) Validity Period: 19 Nov 2014 - on-going Advanced Spanish Language Practice 2 Programme Code: SPAN9009 S 2975 5681 almond.chan@hkuspace.hku.hk This course is to cater for advanced-level students who have already completed the HKU SPACE Certificate in Spanish (Advanced) or the equivalent elsewhere & who wish to approach the language at in advanced & practical way. Students will keep practicing the language, whilst at the same time learning more about the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. They will also be given the opportunity to engage with authentic texts from magazines, newspapers, songs, TV, films etc through discussion & group work. They will improve their oral communication skills & their range of vocabulary. There will be a relaxed & supportive learning environment. The course is not exam-based. Applicants should have: (a) completed the 'Certificate in Spanish (Advanced)' at HKU SPACE OR studied around 480 hours of Spanish and provide a copy of Certificate/ Statement of Attendance to demonstrate this. It is not mandatory for students to have completed the Advanced Spanish language Practice; (b) In the absence of such evidence, external applicants should contact us for further information. Some students may be interviewed to determine their proficiency level; and (c) Applicants would be expected to have acquired a minimum level of B.1.1 on the European Language Framework. It aims to be a simple introduction giving participants a taste for the Spanish language. There will be plenty of opportunities to listen and speak the language whilst learning the basics of Spanish pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. The classroom atmosphere will be relaxed and supportive with practise is small groups using the latest interactive methodology. Topics include greetings, numbers, countries, nationalities, languages, talking about ones job, describing another person, asking and answering questions. No knowledge of Spanish is required though applicants should be competent in English. HK$3,350 10 weeks Spanish supplemented with a little English where necessary for explanation. Beginners’Spanish 2 Programme Code: SPAN9003 S 2975 5681 almond.chan@hkuspace.hku.hk This course is designed for students who have completed Beginners’ Spanish. There will be plenty of opportunities to listen and practice speaking the language whilst learning basic Spanish grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Topics include describing friends and family, everyday language around town, colours and personal characteristics. Participants will also learn a little about the culture of the Spanish- speaking world. The classroom atmosphere will be relaxed and supportive with practise in small groups using the latest interactive methodology. - Applicants should have completed Beginners Spanish OR Spanish for Travel at HKU SPACE OR studied around 30 hours of Spanish in any institution and provide a Certificate/ Statement of Attendance to demonstrate this. - In the absence of such evidence, external applicants should contact us for further information. Spanish for Travel Programme Code: SPAN9001 S 2975 5681 almond.chan@hkuspace.hku.hk This course is for complete beginners who want to learn the language basics fast in a fun way. It’s also a good way to get a taste of the language before committing to a longer course. The emphasis is on speaking and listening, rather than on grammar. Participants will see how a little language can go a long, long way. Some of the topics include introductions, numbers, telling the time, asking for the way, eating out, shopping, booking a hotel room and dealing with communication problems. The language of instruction will be Spanish with a little English where necessary. No knowledge of Spanish is required though applicants should be competent in English. It covers a range of everyday topics and situations and includes a balance of all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), as well as practice on key grammar points, vocabulary and pronunciation relevant to the level. By the end of the programme, students should be able to understand and use basic everyday phrases to introduce themselves, ask and answer questions about personal details. They will also learn language to deal with everyday situations like shopping, eating out, talking about their jobs, families and interests. Applicants shall have: - no previous or little knowledge of the language; and - sufficient English proficiency to follow simple explanations in English.
