Dr Ko Wing-man is an eminent leader in public health services in Hong Kong. His connection with HKU SPACE originated from his interest in Chinese Medicine. Dr Ko grew up with strong influence from his father who used to manage a Chinese pharmacy. Dr Ko’s family also has a tradition of consulting Chinese herb practices during his childhood. He agrees strongly with many traditional Eastern concepts and believes that Chinese and Western medicine each possess invaluable essences. His relationship with HKU SPACE started in 1996 when he decided to pursue the study of Chinese Medicine formally during his tenure at the Hospital Authority. HKU SPACE was a pioneering institution in offering systematic courses on Chinese Medicine at the tertiary level. He enrolled in 6 courses on the topic. Parallel to his study, Dr Ko began planning the integration of Chinese medical services into the city’s mainstream Western medicine infrastructure, putting his interest into actual career and work. He joined the HKU SPACE Alumni Council as founding member in 2004. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Fellow of HKU SPACE in 2009. His story was presented in a video for the 60th Anniversary Campaign and was covered in the 60th Anniversary Book.
