The programme is aimed at students with no previous or little knowledge of the language. It covers a range of everyday topics and situations and includes a balance of all four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), as well as practice on key grammar points, vocabulary and pronunciation relevant to the level. By the end of the programme, students should be able to understand and use basic everyday phrases to introduce themselves, ask and answer questions about personal details. They will also learn language to deal with everyday situations like shopping, eating out, talking about their jobs, families and interests.

The course will be taught using a book and supplemented with authentic materials where appropriate, such as magazine and newspaper articles, film, TV and literature. The main focus will be on oral communication with practice in small groups. The course will be taught in French.

This course is designed to cater for advanced-level students of French who have already completed the HKU SPACE Advanced Certificate in French or the equivalent elsewhere and who wish to approach the language at in advanced and practical way. These students wish to keep practicing the language in an interactive class environment, whilst at the same time learning more about the culture of the French-speaking world.

This course is designed to cater for advanced-level students who have completed all the HKU SPACE German levels or equivalent elsewhere and who wish to keep practising the language in an interactive class environment, whilst at the same time learning more about the culture of the German-speaking world. Students will engage with authentic texts from magazines, newspapers, songs, TV, films and so on through discussion and group work. They will, as a result, improve their oral communication skills and also their range of vocabulary. There will be a relaxed and supportive learning environment and the course is not exam-based.

This course is an opportunity for advanced users of Italian language to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a communicative class through discussion topics, contemporary texts and the media. The course is taught in Italian.

This course is catered for advanced-level students of Italian who have already completed all the HKU SPACE Italian Certificate courses or equivalent elsewhere (480 hours). Students wish to keep practising the language in an interactive class environment, whilst at the same time learning more about the culture of the Italian-speaking world. They will be given opportunities to engage with authentic texts from magazines, newspapers, songs, TV, films etc. through discussion & group work. They will, as a result, improve oral communication skills & range of vocabulary. There will be a relaxed & supportive learning environment. The course is not exam-based.

This is an opportunity for advanced users of Spanish to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The course design is based on a textbook, which is supplemented with authentic materials in teaching where appropriate, such as magazine and newspaper articles, film, TV and literature. The main focus is oral communication with practice in small groups. The medium of instruction is Spanish.

This course is to cater for advanced-level students who have already completed the HKU SPACE Certificate in Spanish (Advanced) or the equivalent elsewhere & who wish to approach the language at in advanced & practical way. Students will keep practicing the language, whilst at the same time learning more about the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. They will also be given the opportunity to engage with authentic texts from magazines, newspapers, songs, TV, films etc through discussion & group work. They will improve their oral communication skills & their range of vocabulary. There will be a relaxed & supportive learning environment. The course is not exam-based.

This course continues on from Beginners’ Arabic 3.  It is designed for students who already possess a basic knowledge of modern standard Arabic (written and spoken) and wish to continue their learning.  Students will continue to learn more aspects of Arab culture, vocabulary related to expressions of feelings, superlatives and comparatives, the past tense with different verb patterns, the ordinal numbers, expression for telling the time, etc.  There will be a relaxed and supportive learning environment and the course is not exam-based.

This course is designed for students who have completed Beginners’ French for Teenagers. Students will continue learning French at a more advanced level, learning topics such as shopping, going to restaurants, telling the time, etc. The classroom atmosphere will be relaxed and supportive with practice in small groups using the latest interactive methodology.
