In today’s era of digital and analytics, business decision is made by referring to different analytics. Insights from machine learning and big data analytics will have to be shared with senior management and key stakeholders to maximize business impacts.

This Executive Workshop aims to provide the basic concept of machine learning, data and analytics and the importance of analytics storytelling in the world today. This programme also equips storytelling skills to generate effective data visual and effective presentation. By exploring various real-life case studies of machine learning and big data, students can shape ideas into a structured way to engage different audiences in the stories.

 

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. Design a strategy for communicating story with data to create high-impact reports and presentations
  2. Formulate problem statement and prepare an effective data analysis request
  3. Perform basic data analysis to create data visualization
  4. Create effective analytics visuals in students’ daily work
  5. Improve analytics presentations through storytelling

Introduction to Data and Analytics

  • Key challenges in today’s digital and analytics and the importance of data analytics
  • Real-life examples of machine learning and big data and the related implications
  • Potential difficulties in communicating to management effectively and explaining the concept of data with illustration of data model commonly used

Use of Visuals

  • Basic concept of data visualization and typical tools for visualization creation, e.g. Excel, Cognos, Tableau, Qlik, and Power BI
  • Explain the typical development process of data visualization and share different kinds of visualization, e.g. use of text, tables, charts
  • General guidelines of performing data analysis to generate different basic analytics to support recommendation

Design Principle of Data Visualization and Presentation Skills 

  • Design principle of data visualization by introducing the concept of proximity, similarity, and enclosure
  • The importance of visual formatting and positioning through some real-life examples  
  • General principles of creating data visualization to support management presentation

Storyboarding and Storytelling

  • The importance of storytelling and the major reasons of using storytelling approach to present data analytics
  • Observation of data patterns from the visuals and practice to create a storyboard in analytics presentation
  • Ways of generating insights and ideas from data and choosing different effective visuals to support storytelling

Practicing and Putting All it Together

  • Power of storytelling and share various examples of successful storytelling with data
  • Major tips to creating impactful presentations with data

Empirical case-studies in Hong Kong and around the world will be drawn for discussion and analysis when delivering the above topics.

Dr Lawson Law

Lawson law

 

Dr Law has held senior management positions in large corporations for over 20 years i.e. Hang Seng Bank Limited and MTR Corporation. He is keen to share his experience in Machine Learning and Data analysis. He has obtained Doctorate Degree in Engineering and Master of Science Degree in Information Systems from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and a Bachelor Degree in Quantitative Analysis for Business from City University of Hong Kong. His research area is related to CRM and Machine Learning.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold:

  • a bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognized university or equivalent or
  • an Advanced Diploma or Higher Diploma / Associate Degree, and have at least 2 years of relevant working experience

Applicants with other equivalent qualifications will also be considered on individual merits.

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and the applicant’s name.. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying  “Course Application” on the envelope.  HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, continuing students of award-bearing programmes, if their programmes offer online service, may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay and Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolement Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circustance.
  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder's credit card account.
  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be repsonsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to "HKU SPACE" to any of our enrolment centres.
