Why study this online course?
Humanity is hurtling toward Space 4.0, with the amplified presence of commercial non-state actors, such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic / Virgin Orbit part of the so-called “Billionaire Space race”. Aside from the commercialization of space, there are increasing tensions in space between international players. This online course will explore international space law and policy and also the possible directions humanity could take in our engagement with ‘the final frontier’.Are there laws in space? Who is responsible for space debris? Can we mine the moon? What is the militarisation of space? Find out more on- Introduction to Space Law and Policy- "Hitchhiker’s Guide to Space Law"!
The main objective of the course is to examine the role of international law in the regulation of outer space activities, particularly with the rapid commercialisation of outer space, and the increase in the number of state and non-state participants in outer space activities. The course will explore a variety of topics including the regulation of the use of outer space for peaceful (and non-peaceful) purposes, review the international legal framework governing space activities, exploitation of space natural resources, liability for damage caused by space activities, and legal ramifications of military and security activities in outer space. This course will be taught by Annie Handmer, a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Science, in the School of History and Philosophy of Science, (who also has her own podcast – ‘Space Junk’) and Steven Freeland, who is an Emeritus Professor of International Law at the University of Western Sydney, Visiting Professor in International Law at the University of Copenhagen, and a Member of Faculty of the London Institute of Space Policy and Law. He has also been a Visiting Professional within the Appeals Chamber at the International Criminal Court, The Hague, a member of the Australian delegation to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, and a Special Advisor to the Danish Foreign Ministry in matters related to the International Criminal Court.
