Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) - MSc Risk Management

The programme will serve as an articulation path for the Postgraduate Diploma in Enterprise Risk Management (Pgdip ERM) graduates of HKUSPACE who have completed the pre-requisite modules. Graduates of Pgdip ERM of HKUSPACE who have completed the *pre-requisite modules, would be exempted five modules (120 credits) and they only need to study the module of ‘Research Methods’ (20 credits) and also submit a 12,000-word dissertation (40 credits) to attain the award of MSc Risk Management (total 180 credits).

Graduates of Pgdip ERM of HKUSPACE who have completed the *pre-requisite modules, would be exempted five modules (120 credits) and they only need to study the module of ‘Research Methods’ (20 credits) and also submit a 12,000-word dissertation (40 credits) to attain the award of MSc Risk Management (total 180 credits).  Students would need to study one module ‘Global Perspective on Risk’ on-line if they do not satisfy the pre-requisite requirement.

*Pre-requisite modules: Business and Professional Ethics, Enterprise Risk Management Framework, Corporate Governance, Financial and Business Risk Management and Business Interruption Crisis Management.

 

Programme Details


The GCU MSc Risk Management in the UK comprises 180 credits, which include 7 modules plus one dissertation. As HKUSPACE Postgraduate Diploma in Enterprise Risk Management has a comprehensive coverage on risk discipline, the graduates will be exempted 120 credits. 120 credits will be exempted for holders of HKUSPACE Postgraduate Diploma in Enterprise Risk Management, i.e., the programme delivered in Hong Kong will be a part-time top-up version and comprises 60credits. Students need to study research method (20 credits) and submit a dissertation (40 credits).

Modules

Research Method (20 Credits) – 16 hours face to face teaching over one weekend plus online support

Module Introduction 
The purpose of the module is to introduce students to research approaches to critical inquiry.   The module provides knowledge research design across key areas and adopts a critical perspective in comparing and contrasting alternative research paradigms, adopting a reflexive approach to the underlying epistemological and ontological research questions.
 
The module is delivered through a weekend of intense teaching and then on-line materials and support.
 
The development of the proposal in this module allows students to prepare for the research by adopting a disciplined, logical and systematic approach to investigating a research or consultancy problem.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:
 
1. Demonstrate advanced working knowledge of a range of key concepts, qualitative and quantitative research methods available to researchers.
 
2. Identify and clearly formulate a research topic in the context of a particular research area of study.
 
3. Critically evaluate literature, select and utilize appropriate methodologies in the formulation of an individual research proposal for a Masters dissertation.
 
4. Control, organize, communicate and analyze qualitative and quantitative research findings in an efficient and effective manner.
 
5. Apply the forgoing skills to develop a dissertation research proposal.
 
Teaching and Learning Strategy
 
The teaching and learning strategy will utilize lectures, computing labs, group discussions and presentations from experts in individual fields to support the learning process.  Conceptual and framework material will be introduced within the lectures and students will be given directed reading of relevant journals and higher level textbooks to analyze prior to the seminar sessions to ensure the process of deepening engagement. GCU Learn will be utilized as appropriate.
 
There will be two distinct stages to the teaching and learning strategy. The first stage will be focused upon the delivery of lectures outlining basic core principles and allows for an understanding of the intricacies and complex relationships between components of the research process itself. Students will be encouraged to contextualize this material in seminars and labs by following a series of core seminar exercises. 
 
This will ensure that students have a comprehensive grounding in the fundamentals of research methods before they begin working on their proposals.
 
The development of the proposal in this module allows students to prepare for the research by adopting a disciplined, logical and systematic approach to investigating a research or consultancy problem.
 
The learning and teaching approach is driven by a focus on developing critical thinking skills and independent learning
 
The use of relevant research examples to ground concepts is also a particular feature and will be focused on the acquisition and development of skills appropriate to independent research.
 
GCULearn will be used to encourage communication between the students as they formulate their ideas for their dissertations and as a forum for discussion on elements of research design.
 
Reading
It is essential that you complete additional order to participate fully in the module.  This can also be supplemented by web-based resources and by following current events as presented in various news media.
 
The core texts (both on GCU library online) are:

However, this in itself is not sufficient and key readings for each topic.

Dissertation (40 Credits) – 16 hours face to face teaching over one weekend plus 10 hours individual student guidance and support

Module Introduction
The aim of this module is to enable you to undertake either an independently driven, subject relevant, large scale project which will give you the opportunity to be assessed on industry relevant topics in the area of risk management.  In so doing, you will get the opportunity to apply analytical, investigative and communication skills necessary for the identification, critical examination and contextual resolution of a specific output.
 
The module identifies three primary strategies which can be adopted:
 
1. A traditional dissertation incorporating the techniques of primary and secondary data collection and analysis
2.  A 'desk-based' dissertation that draws solely from secondary-based sources
3.  An output-based industry relevant practical project of comparable academic merit (carried out in conjunction with a particular company).
 
Common to all will be the need to utilise appropriate underpinning theories to frame, inform and construct the output.
 
Aim
 
The aim of the Dissertation is to enable you to produce a substantial written project on your own, giving you the freedom to research an academic topic of your choice, relevant to your particular degree, examining the subject in greater depth than has been previously possible in other taught modules and assessed coursework.
 
Learning Outcomes
 
Successful completion of the Dissertation module will indicate your ability to:
 
  • Research independently a substantial topic both through reference to existing scholarship and through analysis of primary source material
  • Structure a substantial analytical task in an appropriate fashion
  • Sustain a complex conceptual and theoretical analysis
  • Work purposively to a conclusion from an investigation of disparate data
  • Sustain appropriate standards of written presentation of research work

  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying  “Course Application” on the envelope.  HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. 4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, continuing students of award-bearing programmes, if their programmes offer online service, may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay and Faster Payment System (FPS). Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolement Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circustance.
  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder's credit card account.
  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be repsonsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
