This two-module programme is designed to provide health care professionals with basic knowledge of scientific research methodology in quantitative and qualitative approaches so that they are able to evaluate and apply research findings in clinical practice appropriately.
Evidence based practice is widely accepted in health care setting in Hong Kong. In fact, research and evidence based practice are closely related. All health care professionals have the responsibility to be actively involved in conducting research and / or applying research findings that shape health care delivery. Applied research is carried out to evaluate the outcome of an existing practice or a policy initiative, such as the effectiveness of a clinical,nursing intervention, and to test the theories which are derived from more general sociological, psychological or economic models.
The aims of this programme are 1) to provide health care professionals the fundamentals of scientific research methodology; 2) to develop their ability to conduct critical appraisal on selected and relevant international and local research articles; and 3) to foster interest and enthusiasm for conducting health care research and implementing the outcomes of research findings effectively.
There are 2 modules:
Module 1: Methods on Quantitative Research
Module 2: Methods on Qualitative Research
Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be able to:
1. Apply basic principles of research methodology in the study of a problem (Module 1 & 2);
2. Critically appraise selected research articles in relation to a study topic(Module 1 & 2);
3. Apply knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics in the analysis of data(Module 1);
4. Formulate a research protocol for a selected study topic (Module 1); and
5. Apply knowledge and skills in quantitative and qualitative research(Module 1 & 2).

Module 1– Methods on Quantitative Research
Objectives
Upon successful completion of the Course, students will be able to:
1. Apply basic principles of research methodology in the study of a problem;
2. Critically appraise research findings of refereed articles;
3. Identify and discuss the ethical and legal issues impinging on quantitative
research;
4. Apply knowledge of descriptive and inferential statistics; and
5. Use SPSS package in performing simple statistic analysis.
Assessment
- All students must fulfill a minimum of 70% attendance rate
- A written assignment: research proposal (100%)

Module 2– Methods on Qualitative Research
Objectives
Upon successful completion of the unit, students should be able to:
1. Discuss different qualitative approaches in health care research;
2. Develop a research study framework using qualitative approach;
3. Describe techniques of validation process in qualitative study;
4. Select the appropriate type of interview for a research topic; and
5. Carry out the script analysis.
Assessment
- All students must fulfill a minimum of 70% attendance rate
- Individual presentation (30%)
- A written report (70%)

Teaching Strategies
Lecture, tutorials and computing laboratory for SPSS workshop/exercises.
Award
1. Students will be given a Statement of Achievement on completion of either Module 1 OR Module 2.
2. Upon successful completion of the Module 1 AND Module 2, students will be awarded a Certificate by HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education.
Registered nurses, medical social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and other health care professionals; or those working in health care settings with an interest in health care research.
