Highlights

The main objective of this programme is to introduce students to the dominant perspectives in media and cultural studies, and thus to help them develop the study of media and cultural institutions, ideologies and policies as part of social and economic reality. At the core of the programme is a set of selected scholarly readings that will provide students with an opportunity to review and criticise contesting theories and approaches to the understanding of media and cultural systems and contents in the academic field. The readings and class discussions will be synthesised through a number of presentations and written assignments.

Teaching Mode

As a critique-based programme, a lecture-preview reading assignment is given for each lecture. It consists of a small portion of the reading that will serve as a quick yet crucial introduction to the lecture. Students are required to do the reading before the lecture.

Seminars (12 hours):

In seminars, students will be asked to form small groups to discuss, critically examine and present an assigned topic, as well as working on an extended research project. Before each seminar, students are required to finish assigned readings (usually two book chapters and/or a journal article) and to do extensive individual research after class. The seminars allow students to engage in peer discussions, to develop critical and analytical skills. Students will explore a variety of skills in analysing images and media texts.
