Suite of Investment Banking Courses 

HKU SPACE has developed a series of Investment Banking courses, namely Executive Diploma/Executive Certificate in Investment Banking and Executive Diploma/Executive Certificate in Merger and Acquisition with the objective of addressing the market demands for professionals who are well-versed in the various investment banking functions. 

On completion of 5 modules, students will be able to obtain two Executive Diplomas.

This programme is designed for those who aspire to develop a career in investment banking, merchant banking, management consultancy and/or those who wish to enrich their understanding of the aforesaid industries. The programme aims to provide participants with an overview of the various aspects of the investment banking business and shall be particularly relevant for professionals who are engaged in corporate development and the corporate finance function within a commercial firm.

Module 1 : Business Valuation & Financing (Course Content)

Overview:
Business Valuation and Financing integrates finance theory and spreadsheet techniques to enable the students to learn how to conduct relevant valuation analyses in the context of investment banking. The topics include an introduction to financial modeling, time-value-of-money analysis, discount rates and cost of capital estimation, business valuation, financial statement analysis, and the analysis of capital investments. 

The objectives of this module are to:

  1. provide students with applied knowledge and skills that strengthen their ability to carry out their understanding of how financial analysis and valuation analysis are used in the sector of investment banking, especially in corporate finance and investment management;
  2. help students to develop basic financial models for valuation, which they can later enhance independently; and
  3. build up confidence of students in their use of PowerPoint and Excel spreadsheet, one of the more popular and widely utilized computational tools for valuation, financial analysis, management, and decision-making in many business environments.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. applying finance theories and techniques to assist with common valuation methodsin investment banking field;
  2. using quantitative skills in financial analysis to solve operational and technical problems of the kind that typically confront valuation exercise; and
  3. constructing simple Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint Presentation in business valuation process

Teacher Profile:

Mr. Francis Lau
Mr. Lau has over 10 years’ experiences in financial risk management, quantitative analysis, MIS and regulatory reporting for retail, wholesale and investing banking.  His expertise are in implementing risk management measures in compliance with latest regulatory requirements, operating processes and internal control.  Mr. Lau is a FRM® charter-holder with a Bachelor of Economics and a Master of Finance degree. He is currently pursuing his Ph. D. degree in the dynamic relationships between futures and cash instruments.  With his keen interest, Mr. Lau continues to provide training in the continuing education programs for universities and professional associations. 

Module 2 : Fundamentals of Investment Banking

Overview:
This course is designed to provide students with an overview of the various aspects of the investment banking business. It will cover the role and major functions of investment banks, review the strategic issues faced by investment banks, identify the process in which investment banks issues securities to the public, the deal process, risks of investment banks, the role of the underwriting syndicate and fee structure, and review the concepts of various corporate finance transactions, such as initial public offerings, as well as mergers & acquisitions.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. To critically review the role and major functions of investment banks;
  2. To critically review the strategic issues facing investment banks;
  3. To fully identify the process in which investment banks issue securities to the public, the deal process, risks of investment banks and role of the underwriting syndicate and fee structure;
  4. To fully identify the various methods for firms to raise financing in the capital market;
  5. To critically review the concepts of various corporate finance transactions, such as initial public offering, as well as mergers and acquisitions;
  6. To fully identify the various types of financial instruments associated with investment banking.

Teacher Profile:

Mr. Raymond So
Mr. So is a Senior Programme Director at HKU SPACE.  Prior, he was working in the financial industry for over 18 years at various reputable Investment Banks such as Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Nomura, ING Bank and Deutsche Bank. Raymond has been involved in part time teaching at HKU SPACE since 2012 in areas of Treasury Product & Corporate Financial Management, Mathematics for Finance, and numerous derivative related courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels.  Mr. So is also an active volunteer with JA Hong Kong providing career education to primary students and personal finance education to secondary school students. Mr. So holds a Master of Education from the University of Hong Kong, a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science from Columbia University, New York.

Module 3 : IPO, Private Equity & Hedge Funds

Overview:
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the processes involved in structuring and executing IPO, Private Equity and Hedge Fund transactions. Topics include: a review of the bookbuilding and underwriting processes, case studies of IPO, Private Equity and Hedge Fund transactions, as well as legal and regulatory issues related to IPO, Private Equity and Hedge Funds.

The Course Objectives are:

  1. To equip students with an understanding of the processes involved in structuring and executing IPO, Private Equity and Hedge Funds transactions;
  2. To review the bookbuilding and underwriting processes;
  3. To analyze IPO, Private Equity and Hedge Funds transactions through the use of case studies;
  4. To review the legal and regulatory issues related to IPO, Private Equity and Hedge Funds.
  5. To gain a user and investor’s perspective on hedge funds, venture capital and private equity structures: how they are created, used and abused in the current economic markets.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Identify, implement and evaluate strategies for the resolution of problems 
  2. Critical and Creative Thinking in Problem Solving
  3. Team Building and Project Management Skills 

Teacher Profile:

Mr. Archie Fong
An experienced investment banker and angel investor, currently holds title as General Manager of First Capital International Finance (a member of First Capital Group 1269.HK). He has expertise in direct investment, IPOs, M&As, financial advisory, restructuring and equity fund raising with accumulative transaction amounts over US70 billion and assisted BOCI in securing IPO fund-raising ranking No.1 in HK and the world. 
Prior to joining First Capital Group, he was formerly the responsible officer and sponsor principal of BOCI Asia Limited (wholly owned investment bank of Bank of China Group). He gained experience from Ernst & Young, HSBC Securities, ICEA Capital, BNP Paribas Peregrine and management role in Hong Kong listed China Zenith Chemical, accumulated over 17 years of experience in investment banking, direct investment, accounting, corporate management and investor relationship areas. 
He received a bachelor degree with honour in Actuarial Sciences from The University of Hong Kong and awarded with the Hong Kong Bank Foundation Bursary (HSBC). He is a Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountant and also serves the following posts:
-Council member for Unleash Foundation
-Venture Partner of Hai Hong Cultural Industry Fund (expected to be launched in 2H17) 
-Proposed director and chairman of the policy affair committee for Hong Kong Chief Officer’s Association
-Mentor of SME Programme of Trade and Industry Department of HKSAR government
-Honorary advisor of HKUSU Investment Society
-Part-time lecturer for HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education
-Committee member for Angel Investment Committee and China Committee of British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong 
-Committee member for Financial & Treasury Services, China, Asia and Africa Committee of Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce

Students' performance in each course shall be assessed both by continuous course work assignments (30%) and a final project (70%).

The Executive Diploma in Investment Banking award will be conferred to candidates who have achieved at least 70% attendance as well as attained pass grades in all three modules of the programme. A Statement of Attendance will be granted for candidates who satisfied the first criteria only.

Applicants should:

  • hold a bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline(s) awarded by a recognized university; or
  • hold relevant and recognized professional qualifications in related business area; and have at least 3 years of work experience in the relevant industry. Or
  • hold an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma or equivalent with at least 6 years of senior level work experience in the relevant industry is required.

Applicants with other qualifications and substantial senior level work experience will be considered on individual merits.

Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrolment will be confirmed once you have made the payment. You will receive a payment confirmation after payment has been made processed successfully. You are advised to keep your payment confirmation for future enquiries.

Upon successful admission into the programme, student is require to follow enrolment procedure:

Late applications /enrolments are subject to program leader’s approval and possible late payment charges.

Payment Method

1. Cheque or Bank Draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to "HKU SPACE". Please specify the programme title(s) for application, student's name, and student card number (if applicable). You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrollment centres.
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrollment centres, specifying 'Course Application' on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.

2. VISA/MasterCard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard, including "HKU SPACE MasterCard", at any HKU SPACE enrollment centres. Holders of HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free installment period for courses with a tuition fee of HK$2,000 to $40,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any of the enrollment centres.

Notes

  1. Timetable is tentative and class commencement is subject to sufficient enrolment number.
  2. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or MasterCard if the course is to start shortly.
  3. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances, subject to the School's discretion.
  4. In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries of the relevant programme teams for details.
  5. Fees and places on courses cannot be transferred from one applicant to another. Fees quoted in this brochure apply only to the sessions of studies specified within the brochure and may be subject to revisions even after admission onto this programme. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of $120 will be levied on approved transfers.
  6. Unless a course is over-subscribed or canceled, the following fees are not refundable: application fees, course fees, fees for re-sitting examinations, re-submitting course work, repeating studies and application for exemptions.
  7. The School reserves the right to change the date, time and place of course meeting and to change the course lecturer/ tutor should be this be necessary.
  8. Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  9. For additional copies of receipts, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with a completed form and a crossed cheque for $30 per copy made payable to "HKU SPACE". Such copies will normally only be issued at the end of a course.
