This course introduces major styles, reviews wines from different regions and critically discusses various grape varieties. It is suitable for those who have little or no previous knowledge of the broad range of wines and spirits.

Demand for high quality hospitality calibers has been escalating. The ever-increasing expectation for quality services and the more sophisticated customers also intensified the demand for knowledgeable service providers.

Intermediate Wines and Spirits is a programme specifically designed for industry practitioners and wine hobbyists. The objectives are to provide students with the most up-to-date and professional wine knowledge. This course introduces major styles, reviews wines from different regions and critically discusses various grape varieties. 

This programme adopts the materials and curriculum of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and the classes are taught by WSET approved educators. Students who successfully complete the programme and pass the exam can gain the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits.

WSET was founded in 1969 to provide high quality education and training in wines and spirits. Since then, WSET has grown into the foremost international body in the field of wines and spirits education, with a suite of sought-after qualifications. WSET qualifications are recognised internationally and are now represented in over 60 countries through the world. WSET Award operates a Quality Management System which complies with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9001:2008 for the management of awards for qualifications and examinations in the product knowledge and tasting competence of alcoholic beverages. For details regarding WSET, please visit

HKU SPACE Wine Alumni Association (WAA)

Students are eligible to be a member of HKU SPACE Wine Alumni Association (WAA) after completion of the course. On a regular basis, the executive committee will post the latest updates and promotional materials on the availability of the seminars and events, discounts and offers on the WAA Website at and Facebook at; Email will also be sent for information.

Membership fee is free to current students and alumni of all HKU SPACE wine programmes. Majority of WAA events are hosted by leading figures in the wine industry. All events are exclusive to members, and sometimes with their guests.

Mr. Chris So

Mr. Chris So

Chris has great passion in wine and has been teaching about wine for the past 6 years. To endeavor professional and highest wine knowledge, he is studying the Master of Wine (MW) Programme after gaining the WSET Level 4 Diploma. Chris passed the MW practical tasting papers on his first attempt in 2012 and is now on the final stage working on his MW Research Paper. Chris is also a WSET Certified Educator, a member of Greater China Wine Critics Association, an associate member of the Institute of Wines and Spirits (AIWS) and a judge member of The Hong Kong Wine Judges Association.

Chris is a judge for the “Decanter Asia Wine Awards", "Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition” and “Everyday Bordeaux”. To strengthen his wine knowledge, Chris has travelled extensively to all major wine regions around the world including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Japan and China.


Mr. Raymond So

Mr Raymond So is engaged in the banking industry. He teaches wine studies as the pursuit of his ardent interest. He holds the Diploma in Wines and Spirits issued by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Mr So is currently an Associate of the Institute of Wine and Spirit and a WSET Certified Educator. He has over 10 years’ experience in wine tasting. He is experienced in leading tasting discussion for inspiring students to structurally step into the wide wine world. Mr So also loves to share his experience in picking appropriate wines for fitting the banquet need of business entertainment.


Mr. Ron Taylor

Ron, born in Scotland and a resident of Hong Kong, has been studying wine & spirits for over 30 years and lecturing for at least 12 of those years.

A Certified Educator of the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET), Associate of the Institute of Wine & Spirits (AIWS), a Certified Sommelier from the Court of Master Sommeliers, Certified Wine Specialist and member of the Society of Wine Educators, Member of the Association of Wine Educators, Guild of Sommeliers and the Hong Kong Wine Society.

He has taught consumers, the F&B industry and staff of leading Hong Kong wine companies in both WSET courses and bespoke material.


Ms. Jennifer Luk

Passionate about wines, Jennifer has been working as wine event organiser and wine consultant and experienced in wine education.  Focused on innovation and experiential learning, she hosts Hong Kong’s only wine tasting in complete darkness - ‘Wine Tasting in the Dark’ - to bring completely new and unique experience to wine lovers and wine learners. 

Jennifer attained sommelier introductory certification from Court of Master Sommelier and Advanced Certificate from WSET. In 2010, she was awarded the WSET/Wine Australia Travel Scholarship, as the only representative from China, Hong Kong and Macau to attend master-class in Australia. She is also a freelance wine & travel columnist for various media corporations. In recent years, she has fallen in love with running marathon in wine regions - a special way to broaden her wine traveller experience.


Ms. Vivian Lee

A Hong Kong native, Vivian grew up in New Zealand. After graduating from university, Vivian spent the next few years globetrotting. She worked in restaurants in New Zealand, an advertising agency in Singapore, and briefly in the UK before returning to Hong Kong where she has been for the past ten years. As a food and wine enthusiast, Vivian attended culinary training with Michelin Chef, Alain Ducasse and also with Chef Philippe Meyers at theNZSFW. Vivian loves to visit wine regions of the world, and is always planning for the next vineyard visits.

Vivian's passion for wine lead her to study intensively in this field.  She is currently a candidate of the WSET diploma program after achieving Distinction in their Advance Certificate. Vivian is a qualified tutor for theWSET programme as well as a certified sherry tutor.  Other than WSET, Vivian also conducts wine workshops and training programmes with various organizations and private clubs in Hong Kong, China and abroad.

Vivian believes that every glass is an adventure, and that the joy of wine tasting can be greatly enhanced through sharing and cultivating wine knowledge.



Ms. Katherine Wong

Katherine has an all round work experience across various sectors in the wine industry including being as a wine marketer, editor in wine magazine, wine buyer, founder of her wine business and wine specialist at auction house. She is an approved WSET wine educator, and has been teaching WSET courses. In her class, she is keen to share not only the wine knowledge, but also the practical industry experience. Besides WSET courses, she also delivers wine workshops to organisations in different industries.

Katherine never ceased any opportunities to enhance and prosper her wine knowledge through learning. She has visited vineyards and wineries to gain first hand experience in viticulture and vinification.



Students have to take an external examination after completion of the programme. This paper consists of 50 multiple choice questions. The exam paper and marking arrangement are arranged by WSET.

WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits will be issued to students who pass the exam. Certificate of Achievement of HKU SPACE will be issued to students who have 70% attendance and obtained the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits.

We provide online application and payment service for students to make enrolment via the Internet. Enrolment will be confirmed once students have made the payment online by using either PPS or credit card.

Payment Method
1. Cash or EPS

Course fees can be paid by cash or EPS at any HKU SPACE enrolment counters.

2. Cheque or bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify theprogramme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/MasterCard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard, including the “HKU SPACE MasterCard”, at anyHKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-freeinstalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online payment

The course fees of all open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes can be settled by using PPS via the Internet. Applicants may also pay the relevant course fees by VISA or MasterCard online. Please refer to the Online Services page on the School website.


  1. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or MasterCard if the course is to start shortly.

  2. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder’s credit card account.

  3. In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  4. Fees and places on courses cannot be transferred from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on approved transfers.
  5. Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  6. For additional copies of receipts, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with a completed form and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to ‘HKU SPACE’. Such copies will only normally be issued at the end of a course.
