Highlights

The programme aims to optimise the employment opportunities of graduates in the field of recreation and ageing and to ensure the ongoing development and acquisition of professional knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the provision and management of leisure and recreation programmes in a variety of settings. It aims to create in students an awareness of active ageing with its health, recreation, employment, education and social implications.

Programme Details

The programme provides students with the conceptual background supporting leisure and recreation, policy, resources, social theories of ageing, age-related issues, quality lifestyle and wellness practice as well as professional skills concerning assessment, planning and evaluation in relation to recreation programming for older adults. Ultimately students should be in a position to empower older adults to manage their recreation potential in their chosen lifestyle.

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. Critically appraise and consolidate contemporary literature relating to the social and physiological aspects of ageing including gender, ethics, care, leisure, policies, education and advocacy;
  2. Evaluate how active ageing, particularly in a recreation context, influences the quality of life and wellness in older adults;
  3. Critically discuss the impact of leisure education processes and practice on the development of an individual’s leisure lifestyle and it’s influence on older adults in the community;
  4. Critically examine organisational policy development and resource management planning and practice, within sport and recreation organisations, as the basis for development of programmes for older adults in Hong Kong;
  5. Strategically plan leisure and/or recreation programmes that encourage active ageing in consultation with older adults, agency and programme advocates.

To complete the programme, students are required to achieve 70% attendance of the programme and pass all the assignment.  A Postgraduate Diploma in Active Ageing and Recreation Management will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE to those who have successfully completed the programme.
