This programme prepares registered nurses with advanced nursing knowledge and evidence-based clinical skills in renal nursing to provide competent and high quality nursing care patients requiring complex renal nursing care.

Owing to the steady increase in the number of renal cases in Hong Kong, there is a need in the renal dialysis nursing services and professional training in renal nursing.

The programme aims to prepare experienced registered nurses for an advanced practice role in renal nursing. With focus on advanced nursing care for patients with renal dialysis, renal transplantation, and up-to-date management of patients with acute and chronic renal failure and associated conditions, the programme will prepare nurses with advanced knowledge in renal nursing and clinical specialist skills, to competently provide high quality nursing care to patients requiring hospitalization and home care.

In addition, this programme enables nurses to understand the knowledge of research and to prepare them for roles of evidence-based practice.

There are 2 components to the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice (Renal Nursing).

  1. Upon completion of Module 1, the student may exit with the Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice (Renal Nursing). OR
  2. Students can proceed to enroll in Module 2 to study Methods in Healthcare Research.

Upon completion of Modules 1 and 2, a Postgraduate Diploma will be awarded.

Module 1: Advanced Specialization in Renal Nursing

Module Objectives

On completion of the module, the students should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced nursing knowledge and skills in nephrology practice;
  2. Establish specific nursing care for patients with renal disorders in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare team members;
  3. Critically analyze the outcomes of different treatment and management in renal dialysis unit; and
  4. Prioritize specific nursing interventions based on the outcomes of clinical assessment.

  2. Advanced renal nursing in adult
  3. Advanced renal nursing in child and adolescents
  4. Nutrition and diet
  5. Urology nursing
  6. Professional development

Clinical Component:  9:00 am – 5:00 pm (Weekdays)

The students will spend a total of 40 hours on clinical observation and supervised clinical practice during the course of study. They are expected to apply specialized knowledge and skills in providing comprehensive nursing care to patients in various clinical settings.

Teaching Strategies

Lectures, tutorials, group discussions, and clinical observation and practice.

Students MUST PASS ALL the required assessments. Individual student should complete a clinical logbook, which is a continuous clinical observation record of students’ learning during clinical practicum to successfully complete the course.

Module 2: Methods in Healthcare Research

Module Objectives

On completion of the module, the students should be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate different approaches to the research process;
  2. Critically review research articles as a research consumer;
  3. Discuss the importance of qualitative research methods in understanding human experiences;
  4. Examine approaches, outcomes and values of quantitative designs;
  5. Exercise appropriate judgment in matching research questions to an appropriate research method; and
  6. Undertake critical evaluations of a wide range of numerical and graphical data, and use calculations and basic statistics in different phases of the research process.

  4. Implementing research findings to practice
  5. Basic elements in quantitative research
  6. Common approaches in quantitative research in healthcare

  9. Common approaches in qualitative research in healthcare: grounded theory phenomenology

Upon successful completion of Module 1 of the programme, the students will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice (Renal Nursing).

Upon successful completion of Modules 1 and 2, the students will be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice (Renal Nursing).


Applicants shall:

  1. be Registered Nurses (General) registered with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong; and
  2. have completed Professional Certificate/Certificate in Renal Nursing awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE or an equivalent qualification; and
  3. hold a bachelor's degree awarded by a recognised university.

Course fees can be paid by cash or EPS at any HKU SPACE enrolment counters.

2. Cheque or bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify theprogramme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/MasterCard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard, including the “HKU SPACE MasterCard”, at anyHKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-freeinstalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. 4. Online payment

The course fees of all open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes can be settled by using PPS via the Internet. Applicants may also pay the relevant course fees by VISA or MasterCard online. Please refer to the Online Services page on the School website.


  1. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or MasterCard if the course is to start shortly.

  2. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder’s credit card account.

  3. In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  4. Fees and places on courses cannot be transferred from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on approved transfers.
  5. Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  6. For additional copies of receipts, please send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with a completed form and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to ‘HKU SPACE’. Such copies will only normally be issued at the end of a course.
