Myanmar Voluntary Service Tour

22 Jul 2015

Myanmar is not a popular place for a summer trip for young people, but 29 CC students set off for their voluntary service tour on Jun 22. In this 7D6N tour, they had the opportunity to expose to different culture in a Buddhist developing country in Southeast Asia. More than that, it’s a life-changing experience…….

Firstly, they understood very well an attitude of “Don’t Assume”. They were divided into 6 groups and being asked to prepare for some game sessions for the students in monk school, deaf school, orphanage and slum area. A group was being told the session was for a group of 20 students, but finally 80 children turned up. Another group was being told the programme would be conducted in a youth community centre, but the centre was actually a wooden hut of less than 100 square feet. The students had to work together on the spot, with their team work and problem solving skills, to respond to the change immediately with the aim to bring joyous moments to the children there.

Secondly, learning from the Myanmar children, our students understood that with gratefulness and cheerful attitude, one could live with less. Furthermore, in a place with limited internet access, they built friendship with the staff of our Myanmar partnering organization through direct, face-to-face interaction. The tour ended with Michael Wong’s song, Fairy Tale, in Chinese and Myanmar version, with tears and laughters.

The tour although was very challenging due to the limited resources, students had amazing and fruitful experiences joining the tour.
