The Use of Augmented Reality (AR) in Food and Nutrition Courses
Starting from May 2018, Augmented Reality (AR) techniques will be incorporated into a number of Food and Nutrition Courses. To prepare for this, several 3D models and animations using AR technology were developed in 2017.
By scanning 2D information, in the form of a QR code in the lecture handouts, with their phones, learners can instantly view the 3D structures of compounds like glucose and the biochemical reactions of the molecules.
In this way, learners can ‘visualise’ and actually ‘interact’ with animated objects through different angles of vision, and thus, for example, gain a better understanding of the structural changes of molecules in chain reactions.
In addition, AR applications have been developed to introduce the proper procedures of handling equipment, and devices in laboratories. Step-by-step procedures are outlined to help learners see and ‘feel’ the proper techniques for handling instruments.
Learners can study these procedures and specific functions before attending a laboratory sessions, thus saving time, and improving both safety and efficiency.
