Background

Associate Professor Dr Danny Gittings is a legal scholar holding a Doctoral degree in Law from the University of Hong Kong, a Masters in Law from the University of London and a Bachelor and Masters of Arts from the University of Oxford.

Dr Gittings is a lifelong learner at HKU SPACE, who was awarded a Distinguished Alumni Fellowship (2009), Outstanding Teacher Award (2006) and Outstanding Lifelong Learner Award (2001) for his studies and subsequent teaching at HKU SPACE on the CPE programme (now known as the Graduate Diploma in English and Hong Kong Law), the most popular part-time pathway to the legal profession in Hong Kong.

Following his studies at HKU SPACE, Dr Gittings was called to the Bar as a Barrister of both Gray’s Inn in London and the High Court of Hong Kong.

Dr Gittings joined the staff of HKU SPACE in 2008 and has held a number of academic and management leadership roles. Prior to his promotion to Deputy Director in 2026, he was head of HKU SPACE’s largest part-time college, the College of Humanities and Law.

Dr Gittings has researched and written extensively in the field of constitutional law, including publishing with Cambridge University Press, Routledge, Hart, Hong Kong University Press and City University Press among others. His textbook, Introduction to the Hong Kong Basic Law, is widely used on many law courses. A former journalist who was Associate Editor of the South China Morning Post before switching to an academic career via his studies at HKU SPACE, Dr Gittings was also previously a regular host on Backchat, RTHK’s main English-language talk show.
