October 2015 News Express | 中文版

The construction industry is one of the driving forces behind Hong Kong’s economy. According to figures cited in the Chief Executive’s 2015 Policy Address, the average annual growth rate between 2007 and 2012 in the professional service industries, which include the legal, accounting, auditing, architectural and engineering fields, was 9.9% – far exceeding the territory’s overall economic growth rate of 4.6% during the same period. Future prospects for the construction industry are promising, with opportunities emerging in sectors such as architectural conservation, sustainable development, urban renewal, and building maintenance. Coupled with the booming construction industry in Mainland China, this means the outlook for members of the industry is extremely optimistic.

Constructing a bright future – Quotes from prospective architects

Martin Lai

Third-year student taking the Professional Diploma in Architectural Studies

“Don’t study architecture if you don’t have that spark!”

“After completing a social science degree, I took a master’s degree in environmental planning to study urban design, but the programme focused too much on theory and engineering for my taste, and not enough on the human element, so I switched to architectural studies. Architecture is a process of transformation. It combines sociology, psychology, engineering and design, with all of these elements ultimately represented in the final construction. That’s why I chose this particular programme. It’s Hong Kong’s only part-time programme in architecture catering to students, like myself, with full-time jobs.”

Inspiring teachers

“The programme modules are taught by practising architects and structural engineers, who are passionate about sharing what they know. The curriculum is practical, the teachers are demanding, and the students come from a variety of backgrounds, which has inspired me to think from different perspectives.”

Time management

“Good time management skills are critical, since classes start at 7pm and sometimes last until 11pm, and some studio classes even run through until midnight. We may only get 4 hours sleep on those days, which can be a big challenge.”

A pathway to the profession

After completing the programme, Martin plans to apply for the Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) programme (final year) jointly offered by HKU SPACE and Curtin University, Australia, in a bid to pursue a career in this profession.

Professional Diploma in Architectural Studies

This programme is Hong Kong’s only part-time Diploma in Architectural Studies catering to working students. The programme offers essential knowledge and skills related to design, building technology and professional practices, with a series of exciting activities outside the classroom such as building and site visits and research projects.

Graduates of the programme can seek admittance as second or third-year students to degree programmes offered by numerous Hong Kong, Australian and British universities depending on the result of their GPA and design portfolio, or enrol in the final year of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) programme jointly offered by the School and Curtin University, Australia.

Hugh Yao

Professional Diploma in Architectural Studies (2009-2012)
Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) (2013-14)
Now a student in the Master of Architecture programme at HKU

“I chose to pursue my interest in architecture because it plays an important role among space, humans and society.”

Hugh enrolled in the Professional Diploma in Architectural Studies and then in the Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) (final year) at the School, even though he had already acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Central Lancashire.

Completing a degree programme in just a year

“The Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) programme offered jointly by the School and Curtin University, Australia, requires just one year of full-time study or two years part-time upon the completion of the Professional Diploma in Architectural Studies with the minimum required GPA and pass an admission interview with the Curtin University’s admissions team.”

Add an international perspective

“The programme offers the students many opportunities to interact with foreign architecture teachers. They are very different from Hong Kong teachers, in terms of their cultural and educational backgrounds, as well as the guidance they offer and their way of thinking, which makes the classes much more engaging.”

A ticket into the industry

“The Professional Diploma in Architectural Studies opens the door for those interested in studying to be architects. Obtaining the Bachelor of Applied Science (Architectural Science) and then enrolling in a Master’s degree in Architecture is the ticket into the industry.”

Be ready when opportunity knocks. Now a student in the Master of Architecture programme at HKU, Hugh plans to obtain professional qualifications after graduation, advancing step by step towards his dream of being a registered architect in Hong Kong.
