Art, culture and economic development tend to go hand in hand together. While arts and cultural activities already flourish in established economies like New York and London, they are now becoming economic pillars in developed Asian economies such as in Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

Increasing demand for art and culture talent

Since 2009, Hong Kong has been actively encouraging the development of the cultural and creative industries among the six key industries they have targeted for development. In order to advance in this area, artists, creative practitioners and start-up owners not only need to possess relevant knowledge, but also generate ideas for original artistic and cultural events, while at the same time providing leadership for the teams that realise them across various media, platforms and countries.

First-of-its-kind in Asia: Nurturing arts and cultural leaders

In response to the unique market demand from cultural and creative industries, the HKU SPACE Centre for Degree Programmes has partnered with the Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design (CSM) in London to offer a new MA Arts and Cultural Enterprise# programme aimed at producing multi-skilled individuals who can manage an arts and cultural enterprise, apply financial and business acumen, and respond to multiple new forms of artistic and creative practice and the challenges that ensue both locally and globally. Individuals from other sectors such as banking, investment, architecture and design will also find that knowledge gained in the programme could help them consider an alternative profession in the art and cultural industry.

Capturing opportunities in the new media revolution

Adapting to the opportunities and challenges brought by today’s new multi-platform and digitalised media environment under globalisation is a matter of concern to marketing and branding professionals, entrepreneurs and indeed anyone living and working in today’s digital economy.

Manipulating multi-media platforms in the work place

The MA Media, Communications and Critical Practice# programme, in partnership with the London College of Communication (LCC), uses both global and local experiences to explore trends in the creative industries worldwide and examine local media issues. It focuses on new media that offer instant communication on mobile platforms, such as social media, YouTube and Instagram.

With an introduction to contemporary media and communications alongside the cultural and creative industries, this 16-month programme is particularly suitable for marketing and branding professionals and entrepreneurs. It can also help individuals from other industries to convert into related professions in media and communications.

Graduates from the Postgraduate Diploma in Media and Cultural Critique awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE, or equivalent, are eligible to apply for credit exemption.
