Highlights

This programme is for those wishing to progress to more senior positions in medical laboratories. Students are required to complete a research project and six modules, which will be taught in a blended mode with online tutorials, lectures, hands-on practicals and face-to-face tutorials.

This programme provides students with a detailed critical knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of specialist disciplines such as hematology and transfusion science, medical microbiology, molecular biology, toxicology, pathology, immunology, and the integration of these disciplines for use in Biomedical Science. The programme provides graduate with a qualification that would help them in career advancement in medical laboratories.

Career advancement includes promotion to Medical Technologist (MT) or Senior Medical Technologist (SMT) in the public sector; or as Laboratory Director in private medical laboratories.

One important feature of the programme is the incorporation of substantial laboratory practical components into the “Applied Medical Microbiology” and “Haematology and Transfusion Science” modules.

Each module begins with an induction week conducted by academic staff from Edinburgh Napier University and local lecturers. After the induction week, there are face-to-face lectures/ tutorials and laboratory practicals scheduled throughout the semester. Online learning support and interaction amongst students and tutors are enabled via the Moodle site. Thus, students can communicate actively with both the local teachers and with academic staff of Edinburgh Napier University as well as amongst themselves.
