In association with the University of Ulster, UK, HKU SPACE offers a programme leading to the awards of Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Human Nutrition, Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Dietetics, Master of Science (MSc) in Human Nutrition and Master of Science (MSc) in Human Nutrition and Dietetics.
Aims
The PgD/MSc programme aims to fulfill both the academic and professional requirements laid down by the Academic Committees of HKU SPACE and the University of Ulster and for the PgD in Dietetics programme, the professional requirements of the Dietitians Board of the Health Profession Council (HPC, U.K.).
This programme is designed to provide academically challenging postgraduate education for graduates who wish to pursue a career in human nutrition. The programme will provide students with the opportunity to extend their knowledge and critical skills in human nutrition and to apply such methods and techniques to the resolution of nutritional problems. For graduates who proceed to the PgD Dietetics programme, the qualification will provide them with the knowledge to practice dietetics with individuals and groups in the hospital and the community setting.

Programme Structure and Content
Postgraduate Diploma in Human Nutrition
All students will initially enroll in the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Nutrition and will undertake 6 taught modules.
The six taught modules namely:
- Nutrition and Metabolism;
- Research Design and Statistics;
- Public Health Nutrition;
- Nutritional Controversies;
- Applied Nutrition;
- Dietetics.
are undertaken over two semesters in Teaching Block I (please refer to Progression Path).
Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics
Admission to this course is by transfer on successful completion of the PgD in Human Nutrition. Students who have excelled academically may be considered for entry to the PgD in Dietetics programme. Prospective candidates will be called for interview by the Board of Admission who will assess the candidate's suitability before offering him/her a place in the course.
The PgD in Dietetics course consists of a Dietetics Professional Issues module and a full time 28-week clinical placement in hospitals. Students graduate with a PgD in Dietetics after successfully completing the clinical placement and final dietetics examinations (2 papers).
MSc in Human Nutrition/MSc in Human Nutrition & Dietetics
To progress on to the MSc, all students should have successfully completed the PgD in Human Nutrition or PgD Dietetics programmes. This MSc programme will provide an education and training in research.
In order to progress to the Master's stage, students are required to have obtained an overall average pass mark of 50% or more and no less than 50% in any component or examination. Students will undertake a research project that extends over a period of 4 months (full time) or 1 year (part time).

Entry Requirements
Applicants should be:
- degree holders in human nutrition or related science subjects or
-
non-related science and non-science degree holders who have successfully completed:
- HKU SPACE Advanced Diploma in Nutrition/Child & Adolescent Nutrition and
- HKU SPACE Advanced Certificate in Human biochemistry and Physiology
- and provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE grade C or equivalent).
For Postgraduate Diploma in Human Nutrition:
Selection will be based on academic excellence and an interview. Candidates will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course.For Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics:
On successful completion of the PgD Human Nutrition, candidates may be considered for transfer to the PgD Dietetics providing they have: demonstrated good academic performance in the PgD Human Nutrition with no condonements; no police record; good health as evidenced by a satisfactory complete medical report; excellent communication skills as assessed by an interview; demonstrate a commitment to the dietetics profession. Ability to speak and read Chinese is essential to ensure that students are able to communicate and learn effectively. In each case the candidate shall satisfy the Admissions Committee that he/she is unlikely to be handicapped in his/her studies by language.For Msc in Human Nutrition/MSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics:
Students must attain an overall pass mark of 50% or greater in the PgD in Human Nutrition/PgD in Human Nutrition/PgD in Dietetics to proceed into the MSc in Human Nutrition/MSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics programme. -
