Online Teaching and Learning

HKU SPACE is committed to investing in and utilising advanced technology as well as available learning resources to promote innovative and creative teaching pedagogies for the enhancement of learning experiences.

Our initiatives on online teaching and learning:

ONLINE LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

SOUL (HKU SPACE Online Universal Learning) is an online learning management system which is available to all HKU SPACE learners and teachers for collaboration in various online learning activities. Supported by the Web 2.0 tool, users can acquire or share course materials, perform discussions, and interact with each other.

GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The adoption of Generative AI in teaching and learning enables personalised education, fosters engagement, and optimises learning outcomes by creating dynamic and interactive learning experiences tailored to individual learners' needs and abilities.

The School will include different Generative AI applications and is ready to provide a more comprehensive learning environment with cutting-edge technologies.

ACADEMIC POLICY STATEMENT IN RELATION TO GENERATIVE AI IN TEACHING AND LEARNING

The policy of the School in relation to the use of artificial intelligence tools is as follows:

First of all, the passing off of work produced by AI as one’s own without acknowledgement is regarded as plagiarism and will be penalised (please refer to the academic regulations in this context).  This applies to all programmes.

Secondly, all curricula at HKQF Level 4 and above will include content on the proper and ethical use of AI which is important both from an educational perspective and from the perspective of potential future employers who will expect graduates to be familiar with the proper use and applications of AI.

Thirdly, in order to support students and teachers (full time and part time in both cases) the School will make available links and access to AI tools via the SOUL platform so that they can become familiar with their use in their work for the School.

Fourthly, in this context, it should be noted that these tools provided by the School should only be used for their academic work in the School and not for any other purposes.

ONLINE LECTURES

To meet the demands of online lectures, Virtual Classroom, Zoom, Webinar services are provided by the School. These are web-based conferencing tools that allow teachers to conduct live lectures, meetings, and presentations over the Internet. These live lecture tools enable the presenter and audience to attend and interact with each other virtually.

HYBRID CLASSROOMS AND DISTANCE LEARNING ROOMS

Hybrid Classrooms and Distance Learning Rooms can facilitate synchronous, mixed-mode of teaching and learning without the constraint of physical locations. These facilities provide high flexibility to learners in the online learning arena. Most of the teaching classrooms on the campuses are equipped with advanced features.

VIRTUAL REALITY AND AUGMENTED REALITY

VR, AR and 3D printing have been introduced to various subjects including aviation, dietetics, food & nutrition, library and information studies, marketing, healthcare and pharmaceutical studies.

CAVE AUTOMATIC VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT

CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment, offering virtual and augmented reality) allows students of different disciplines such as Architectural Studies, Marketing and Retail Management to explore the world through an interactive learning model.
