  • Mr Eric Kwong (College Lecturer of HKU SPACE)

Mr Eric Kwong

Eric Kwong is a College Lecturer at HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) and is currently the executive committee member of the Society of Japanese Languae Education Hong Kong. He has extensive experience in teaching Japanese language and Japanese culture, and has been in charge of the Associate of Arts in Languages and Humanities (Japanese Studies Theme) for many years. He was awarded the Outstanding Teacher Award of the HKU SPACE International College in 2018 and won the “Best Paper Award” in the 9th Biennial Convention of the Pacific and Asian Communication Association in 2012.

Japan boasts a rich linguistic diversity. While Japanese (Nihongo) is the predominant language, Japan's linguistic heritage also includes other languages such as the Ainu Language, Okinawan (Uchinaguchi), and Japanese Sign Language (JSL), each holding significant cultural and social value. This seminar will explore the characteristics of these languages and their importance in Japanese culture and society. Additionally, it will examine the relationship between language and cultural identity, discuss the challenges faced by endangered languages like Ainu and Okinawan, and the efforts made by local communities to preserve these vital cultural assets.
