Course Description
Effective Writing Skills 1 will develop your practical writing skills so that you write more clearly, more accurately and more effectively.
You will learn how to:
- plan before you write
- organise your writing into suitable sentences that allow one idea to lead to another
- use correct punctuation and linking words
- select and use effective vocabulary
- edit your drafts
- finalise your writing
To benefit from the course, you should be prepared to participate fully in all exercises and activities.
Effective Writing Skills 1 is part of the Introductory Certificate in English Language Skills programme. The Introductory Certificate in English Language Skills consists of short courses that deal with specific English language skills. These short courses can be taken individually. There are five modules (each of 45 hours' duration) currently on offer.

Module 2 Effective Writing Skills 1
Module 3 Pronunciation and Fluency 1
Module 4 Speaking and Listening 1
Module 5 Vocabulary Enhancement 1
Completion of any one module from Modules 1 - 2 and any one module from Modules 3 - 5 within four years leads to "Introductory Certificate in English Language Skills".

Teaching Staff
Instructors of the course are drawn from our panel of qualified and experienced English language teachers. Some of them are native speakers; others are local teachers with native speaker competence.
Notes to Applicants
- Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
- Unless changes are made to the advertised details, we do not usually issue joining instructions. If your application has been accepted, you should go to the first session of the class at the time and place shown.
- No refunds or transfers to a different class will be approved.
Entry Requirements
Applicants shall:
- hold a Foundation Course in General English Statement of Achievement within the HKU system through HKU SPACE; or
- have gained in the HKDSE Examination Level 2 in English Language; or
- have gained in the HKCEE Grade E (Syllabus B) or Grade C (Syllabus A) in English Language prior to 2007 or Level 2 in English Language from 2007.
Applicants with equivalent qualifications will be considered on individual merit.
Applicants who do not meet the above requirements or are unable to produce documentary proof(s) need to take the SPACE English Course Entrance Examination.
For result verification, copy(ies) of relevant course or examination result(s) must be attached to the application forms.

Introductory Certificate in English Language Skills |

Continuing Education Fund
The Introductory Certificate in English Language Skills programme is registered with the Office of the Continuing Education Fund (OCEF) as a CEF reimbursable course. To qualify for CEF reimbursement, you must pass the course and must register with the OCEF before taking the course.
Eligible applicants can claim a refund of 80% of their fees, up to a maximum of $10,000.
To be eligible for CEF reimbursement, students must:
- register with The Office of the Continuing Education Fund before the start of the class;
- fulfil the 70% attendance requirement;
- pass the course successfully;
- pass the external English benchmark test (eg BULATS) at the required proficiency level
