- Most students easily complete the course within 1 year, but those who need more time can defer their studies for several years if necessary.
You will acquire 5 key legal subjects in the Certificate in Legal Studies, which introduces you to areas of law advantageous to your life and professional career:
- Hong Kong Legal System and Method (Introduction to the Hong Kong legal system)
- Civil Procedure (The rules and procedures for court cases)
- Law of Obligations (Laws concerning Contract and Tort)
- Business Associations (Important laws about companies and partnerships)
- Hong Kong Basic Law (The most important law in Hong Kong)
The Certificate in Legal Studies is far more flexible than most other courses for sitting your exams. You may choose from 3 exam sessions a year, normally held in May/June, August and October/November.
It is up to you when you choose to sit your exams, depending on which of these exam sessions is most convenient for you. In order to give you this flexibility, we charge a separate examination fee of $600 which includes up to five exams during the same session.

All classes are held from 7:00 pm-10:00 pm on weekday evenings and/or from 2:30 pm-5:30 pm on Saturday afternoons.
To help students with busy work/family lives, classes are normally limited to a maximum of two classes per week
The only compulsory written work on the Certificate in Legal Studies are 5 written assignments (one for each subject) of up to 2,000 words each. You will usually be given these assignments (which constitute 25% of the final mark) several months before the submission deadline, and your lecturers will give you guidance on how to answer them.
This is an open entry course suitable for all students at all educational levels. About half of the students are normally university graduates, but students without existing academic qualifications are also welcome.
All students must attend 70% of all scheduled classes, but this 70% attendance requirement is measured across the whole year, and does not apply to each individual module.

Continuing Education Fund
One of the attractions of this course is that most students aged 18-65 can claim reimbursement of up to $10,000 in course fees after only one year's study.
The Certificate in Legal Studies is included in the list of Reimbursable Courses under the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Continuing Education Fund. This means eligible students can claim up to $10,000 reimbursement from the Fund as soon as they successfully complete the course.
You will need to enroll on the course first and should then apply directly to the Fund (not HKU SPACE) before your first class.

This programme has been included in the list of CEF reimbursable programmes. Application for CEF has to be made before commencement of the programme.
All students who complete the Certificate in Legal Studies followed by the Diploma in Legal Studies can use the professional title of Associate Paralegal and the letters A.Inst.Pa after their name.
Paralegal are assistants to lawyers, who help in carrying out legal work such as liaising with clients and drafting legal documents. For many students, working as a Paralegal is a useful first step towards becoming a lawyer. You must join the Institute of Paralegals, which is a UK-based body that sets professional standards for paralegals and has accredited this course as an Approved Course. The Institute charges an annual fee, but offers free membership to students while they study on this course. (Note: HKU SPACE is not affiliated with the Institute of Paralegals, and all membership inquiries should be directed to the Institute.)
The Hong Kong Judiciary also allows all graduates of the Diploma in Legal Studies with at least 3 years’ legal work experience to appear before a District Judge in the District Court or a Master in the Court of First Instance in certain types of hearings. (For more information, please see Practice Directions 14.1 and 27 issued by the Hong Kong Judiciary.)
Become a Legal Executive on the Professional Stream
Students on the Professional Stream can also qualify as Legal Executives, by completing the Diploma in Legal Studies followed by 3 subjects on the Advanced Diploma in Legal Studies (which normally takes 6-9 months).
This professional title can only be used by students who complete an Approved Legal Executive Course recognized by the Law Society of Hong Kong, and the Professional Stream was one of the first courses recognized by the Law Society for this purpose.
Legal Executive are also assistants to lawyers who help in carrying out many types of legal work, and this professional title is widely recognized by law firms in Hong Kong.
The Law Society also sets basic educational eligibility requirements for those wishing to work as Legal Executives. For further information on these requirements, please see Paragraph 2(b) of the Law Society's Benchmarks for Legal Executive Courses.
Note: These requirements only apply to students wishing to use the title of Legal Executive after they complete the course. They are not requirements for entry to this course and students can enroll on this course even if they do not currently meet these requirements.
Note: Due to Law Society rules about the maximum class size, students on the General Stream cannot currently qualify as Legal Executives.

2. Cheque or Bank Draft
Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to "HKU SPACE". Please specify the programme title(s) for application, student's name, and student card number (if applicable). You may either:
- bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres.
- or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres, specifying 'Course Application' on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard, including "HKU SPACE MasterCard", at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres, or through online enrolment for the Certificate in Legal Studies (General Stream). Holders of HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee of HK$2,000 to $40,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself.
