Sponsorship Scheme To attract talented individuals to join the professional field as dental therapists, the Department of Health of the Government of HKSAR, has set up a sponsorship scheme to provide financial assistance to the graduates of the Advanced Diploma in Dental Therapy programme. Upon successful completion of the programme, the graduates can receive a full sponsorship of the tuition fees under the conditions specified by the government. The annual sponsorship amount is up to HK$70,000.
Programme Overview
Highlights
The Department of Health provides annual dental check-up, basic and preventive dental treatment for all the primary school children in Hong Kong through the School Dental Care Service (SDCS). The services of SDCS are performed by qualified Dental therapists and that include oral health education, scaling and polishing, fluoride application, sealant application, radiograph-taking, simple restoration and extractions.
Programme Details
The programme consists of four modules:
1. Managing Dental Caries in Children
2. Medical and Dental Problems in Children
3. Dental Public Health and Ethics
4. Clinical Dentistry
Mode of Delivery
Lectures will be delivered in English. Clinical sessions may be conducted in Cantonese. Most of the lectures will be delivered at The Prince Philip Dental Hospital and clinical practice will be carried out in the School Dental Care Service of the Department of Health.
Assessment
Students are assessed by quizzes, tests, written examinations, practical exercises and examinations, case evaluation and clinical viva examinations. The attendance requirement of each module is at least 90%.
Award
The Advanced Diploma in Dental Therapy will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE to candidates who have successfully attended, completed and passed the assessments of ALL modules.
Sponsorship Scheme Details
(I) Training Sponsorship Scheme (“the Scheme”) Aims
· The Scheme targets to attract talented individuals to join these disciplines so as to strengthen the workforce of DHy and DTh in the public sector. The Department of Health (“DH”) or designated non-government organizations (“NGO”) may offer placement to all sponsored students upon graduation.
(II) Amount of Sponsorship
· Annual tuition fee ($70,000) fully sponsored by the Scheme under conditions specified by DH.
(III) Eligibility
· Be a Hong Kong permanent resident with the right of abode in Hong Kong;
· Has been offered a training place in this Advanced Diploma in Dental Therapy programme; and
· Passed the selection interview.
(IV) Undertaking and Indemnity to the DH
· Sponsored students are required to sign an undertaking with DH to acknowledge and agree to the following
(a) to complete the training programme to the satisfaction of the recognised training institution and DH;
(b) to work in DH or be deployed to other specified institution (e.g. NGOs participating in publicly-funded dental initiatives) for one year after graduation;
(c) to lose the right to be reimbursed the tuition fee if he/she is in breach of the undertaking in (a) above; and
(d) to repay DH the tuition fee in full or in part under conditions specified by DH.
(V) Details
Further details set out by DH will be distributed by the training institution to all students after admission.

Entry Requirements
Applicants shall hold a Higher Diploma in Dental Hygiene awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.
Applicants with other equivalent qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

Course fee can be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to "HKU SPACE". Please specify the programme title for application, student's name, and student card no. (if applicable).
Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or MasterCard.
Holders of the Bank of East Asia's HKU SPACE MasterCard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment for courses with a tuition fee of HK$2,000 to $40,000. The cardholder must also be the course applicant himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any of the enrolment centres.
