About Asian Academy of Family Therapy

The Asian Academy of Family Therapy (AAFT) is a charitable, non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting family therapy research, training, and practice throughout Asia. Established in September 2011 by the founders of the Hong Kong University Family Institute, AAFT was formerly known as the Academy of Family Therapy. In 2015, it was renamed to reflect its broader mission beyond Hong Kong.

With a strong history of developing the first master’s degree in family therapy at the University of Hong Kong, AAFT has been providing training and supervision to professionals for over two decades. Their unique, trans-disciplinary, and systemic approach emphasises collaborative efforts – especially during the assessment phase – to enhance the effectiveness of all parties involved.

AAFT offers a diverse range of educational and clinical training programs aimed at professionals from various disciplines. AAFT is known for its live family interview demonstrations, attracting many clinicians who prefer hands-on training over purely theoretical instruction. Their services span a wide spectrum of family therapy topics, from child-focused divorce counselling to addressing children's mental health within the family context. One of their standout features is the Family Biofeedback Assessment© protocol, which offers scientific insights into the dynamics between children and their families. This innovation has earned their Clinical Director, Dr. Wai Yung Lee, the prestigious American Academy of Family Therapy award “for significant contributions to family therapy theory and practice.”
