How to Apply


Master of Information Studies provides students with in-depth understanding of the creation, evaluation, collection, organisation, utilisation and dissemination of information in the contemporary information environment.

This distance learning programme, offered in collaboration with Charles Sturt University, Australia, is supplemented by local tutorials. The obtained academic qualification has full recognition by Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Upon special request, students can choose to exit at Graduate Diploma level and will receive the CSU Graduate Diploma of Information Studies (which is the Intermediate Award of Master of Information Studies).

>Credit exemption would be given to students with relevant academic qualifications in library and information management and/or working experience.

In the 21st century, the library field is undergoing numerous changes that are redefining the traditional roles of and job opportunities for information professionals. Factors responsible for the changing nature of the library field include the emergence of new technologies, changing user expectations, etc. In order to respond to the ongoing changes, HKU SPACE collaborated with Charles Sturt University, Australia (CSU) delivering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of information studies for prospective information professionals to equip their skills to meet the increasing needs of diverse users.

Students holding Diploma of Teacher Librarianship or Bachelor of Information Studies or  Graduate Diploma of Information Studies will receive a special credit exemption.

Charles Sturt University has registered on the national register of Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) under the Australian Government.

2. Specialisation is not offered to HK students.

Assessment method

Assessments are mainly based on assignments. If students fail a subject, they have to re-take the subject in a session where the subject is being offered.

    Students can speed up their studies if they take more subjects in a session.
Non-Local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance

This is an exempted course under the Non-local Higher and Professional Education (Regulation) Ordinance. It is a matter of discretion for individual employers to recognise any qualification to which this course may lead.

Professional Accreditation

The obtained academic qualification has full recognition by the Australian Library and Information Association and internationally by other library associations.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall: 

1. hold a bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognised institution; AND  

2. provide evidence of English proficiency#, such as: 

(a) Level 3 in English Language in HKDSE; or 

(b) Grade D in the Use of English in HKALE; or 

(c) an overall band of 6.0 with subtest of 6.0 in the IELTS Academic*; or  

(d) a score of 550 in the PBT TOEFL or a score of 60 in TOEFL IBT; or  

(e) an overall score of 50 in PTE Academic*; or equivalent.  


Applicants with relevant work experience and provide evidence of English proficiency as stated in requirement 2(a) – (e) will be considered on individual merit by Charles Sturt University. 


* IELTS Online or PTE Academic Online tests are not accepted. The IELTS Academic test result should be obtained within the last 2 years. 

# Applicants will be exempted if: 

- applicants were born in one of the following eligible countries, have completed at least one qualification in that country, and the language in which the qualification was undertaken was English: OR 

- while applicants were not born in one of the following eligible countries, applicants completed senior secondary study or at least one year of full-time university study in one of these countries, and the language in which the qualification was undertaken was English.  

- Eligible countries include:

Enrolment Method

Application can be done in person at any of the School's Enrollment Centres by submitting the followings:
1. Completed HKU SPACE enrolment form SF26
2. Completed CSU application form
3. Application fee of HK$150
4. Relevant certified documents, e.g. academic certificates (See Notes)

1. CSU requires applicants to provide evidence of their English language proficiency, please refer to the detail on page 2 of the CSU application form.

2. CSU Applicants should bring along an original copy of the document and a photocopy of the document to the Enrolment Counter for verification.

Please note that course fee will only be collected from successful applicants after the selection process by HKU SPACE and Charles Sturt University.

Payment Method
1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and the applicant’s name.. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying  “Course Application” on the envelope.  HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (course enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, continuing students of award-bearing programmes, if their programmes offer online service, may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay and Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.


  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolement Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circustance.
  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque or PPS (for online payment only) will normally be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will normally be reimbursed to the payment cardholder's credit card account.
  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • Receipts will be issued for fees paid but HKU SPACE will not be repsonsible for any loss of receipt sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to "HKU SPACE" to any of our enrolment centres.
