Highlights

The programme aims to:
 
  • Introduce students to simple phrases and sentences used in basic conversation.
  • Teach students the basic grammar and vocabulary needed for simple communication.
  • Provide students with the techniques needed to listen with confidence to simplified, everyday dialogues when spoken clearly and slowly.
  • Introduce students to some aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures such as places for travel and traditional clothing.
  • Enable students to extract information from simple written texts such as forms, and short, simplified articles, and to write short, simple emails and fill in information on a form.

 

Programme Details

On completion of the programme, students should be able to

  1. in speaking, briefly introduce themselves and use simple words or phrases to handle different basic situations in daily life or in a trip.
  2. in writing, produce short, simple texts, e.g. a brief email about their daily life or form filling regarding the topics covered in the programme.
  3. in listening, demonstrate an understanding of the key ideas from simple conversations about the topics covered in the programme when the language is spoken slowly and clearly.
  4. in reading, extract key ideas from brochures, forms and short, simplified texts on the topics covered in the programme.

Syllabus

  • Around the Town: Vocabulary of shops and places in town, asking for and giving directions around the town, prepositions of place, irregular verbs, pronunciation /b/ and /v/, introduction to a Columbian city.
  • Travel: checking out tourist information (opening hours, dates, etc.), a trip around Spain, form filling, negatives in present tense, reading and writing a personal email, pronunciation /c/ and /z/.
  • Hobbies: Vocabulary of leisure activities, reading and writing short emails and letters, vocabulary of family members and festivals, possessive pronouns, reading about festivals in Spain.
  • Sports and Health: Vocabulary of body parts and sports, talking about sickness, use of “muy”, “bastante”, “poco” and “mucho/-a/-os/-as”, modal verbs.
  • Clothing: Vocabulary of clothes and colours, conversation in a shop, simple past form (indefinido) of “ir” and “estar”, time references of the past, accentuation, traditional clothing of Spain.
  • DELE A1 Preparation: reading, writing, listening, and speaking training on the topics covered in simulation of the DELE A1 examination.

Assessment

Course participants' progress is measured through a number of assessment components including:

  • A final written test
  • Oral work – continuous assessment
  • A final oral test

Award

Upon successful completion of the programme, students who have passed the assessment with attendance no less than 70% will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE a “Certificate for Module (Introductory Spanish for Secondary School Students II)”.

IMPORTANT Notes to Applicants:

  1. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first served basis.
  2. Applicants are normally required to provide information from their HKID card (for local applicants) or passport (for non-local applicants) for admission assessment and student records purposes. Applicants to award-bearing programmes will also be asked to present their HKID/passport for verification if applying in person at enrolment counters or to attach a copy of their HKID or passport if applying by post. 
  3. To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong as dependants and non-local applicants issued with a valid employment visa.   4. Your online enrolment is successfully completed and CONFIRMED when you see the payment confirmation, which will be sent to your email address by the system. If you need the official receipt, please obtain it at one of our enrolment centres with the payment confirmation.
  5. Please check if you have enrolled in the right course by comparing the application code with the information on our website.
  6. Should you enroll online within one week before the course starts, please contact the Programme Team as soon as possible. Students should attend the first session of the class at the specified time and place unless any change is made to the advertised details. 
  7. Approximately one week before the course, students will receive an email with a detailed course schedule and a book list, with which students can enjoy a discount when purchasing the course books. All the other course materials will be given in the first lesson.
  8. The course will be confirmed only upon sufficient enrolment.
  9. No refunds or transfers to a different class/ course will be approved.
  10. No make-up classes will be offered for students’ absence.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall have:

(a)   i) obtained the Certificate for Module (Introductory Spanish for Secondary School Students 1), awarded within the HKU

system through HKU SPACE; or

        ii) studied approximately 60 contact hours of Spanish at a different institution

and

(b)    sufficient English proficiency to follow simple explanations in English.

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. 4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
