This 36-hour course is designed to teach students performance and communication skills. It will include performing monologues, duologues and short scripted plays. Performance skills will be developed by doing movement and voice/breathing exercises. Exercises in projecting emotion will assist students to be expressive when speaking. Techniques such as pausing, emphasis and effective body language will assist students to communicate effectively and dynamically. A public performance at the end of the course will provide an opportunity for students to utilise the skills they have learnt and build their confidence.
Each session will start with a movement warm-up and movement exercises. This will be followed by breathing and vocal exercises. After this, students will be given monologues and duologues to perform to develop their performance and communication skills. Exercises will be repeated and students will receive feedback to help them improve the skills they are learning. Also, during this week, students will choose a short, scripted play which they will perform at the end of the course. Rehearsal of this will begin in this week.
Each session will continue to start with movement and vocal exercises although these will target specific skills that students will need when they perform their plays. Students will attempt different types of monologues and duologues (comedy/drama; different types of emotions; different types of characters). Rehearsal of the scripted play will continue throughout this week. On the Saturday of this week, there will be dress rehearsals of the plays and on the Sunday they will be performed in front of an audience of family and friends.
It is envisaged that a theatre make-up session will be offered to give students the experience of this aspect of performance. Also, it is hoped that a visit to a professional theatre/rehearsal can be arranged.
