Highlights

With the integration of HK with the Greater Bay Area to develop innovation and technology, the knowledge of IP rights is increasingly important to the business and innovation sectors.   Given this, the IP rights and legislation in Hong Kong and Mainland are included in the syllabus to address the needs created by GBA development. 

IP

Programme Details

The programme aims to:

  • Equip students with sufficient competence to leverage Intellectual Property (IP) in commercial settings to optimize knowledge-based innovation;
  • Enhance students’ knowledge on IP rights and legislations in Mainland China;
  • Inspire students’ confidence in managing IP by equipping them with sound knowledge of relevant legal framework for innovation development; and
  • Train students to apply strategic thinking and win-win approaches to create synergy in collaborations of open innovation.

 

On completion of the programme, students should be able to

  1. Leverage IP in commercial settings to optimize knowledge-based innovation as an integral part of corporate strategy for business growth;
  2. Examine legal frameworks to formulate strategy and drive business growth by commercialising innovation through IP creation, ownership, protection, and exploitation;
  3. Create synergy by integrating the regulatory and commercial perspectives for innovation-driven growth in today’s knowledge economy;
  4. Formulate a strategic Intellectual Property Management (IPM) plan in their own industries and develop a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness and efficiency;
  5. Discuss IP rights and related legislation and enforcement in Mainland China.

Arthur Hue-Yeung Au, Barrister-at-Law, MCIArb, LLB (Bristol), MA (UCL), PCLL (CityU)

Arthur is a Hong Kong qualified barrister (4-5 years PQE) specializing in employment personal data protection law, IT governance, intellectual property (IP) law, tech law and cryptocurrency regulations.

He is regularly retained by regional & global corporate clients to advise on complex multi-jurisdictional personal data-related compliance issues concerning different privacy regimes including but not limited to HK's PDPO, EU's GDPR, PRC's PIPL and other APAC data protection regimes (e.g. JP, AU, SG and TW) in the context of employment law, risk management and IT governance.

Arthur also has an active advisory practice in tech-related matters. He has advised clients on cryptocurrency-related freezing order, pre-sale token purchase agreement, cybersecurity insurance policy, SaaS agreements and bio-tech regulations. 

Apart from data protection and tech law, Arthur has also advised clients on M&A transactions, joint venture shareholders’ agreement, regulatory & licensing issues, vendor risk assessment and internal compliance and governance policies.

In the IP space, Arthur has previously advised clients on trademark litigations. He is appointed by the Hong Kong Film Censorship Authority as a member of the Panel of Advisers (Film Censorship) from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. He teaches IP Asset Management at HKU SPACE as a part-time tutor and also delivers workshops for the Hong Kong Management Association.

Arthur is a member of the Hong Kong Bar Association, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), PCPD's Data Protection Officers' Club (DPOC) and was a Non-Executive Director at ADG Consultants Limited. He has published articles in tech industry magazines, e.g. JUMPSTART, CPO Magazine, IoT For All and given talks on issues related to tech-funding, data protection and IoT regulations.

He is also the founder of 月非奧, a research group in Hong Kong dedicated to the study of astro-philosophy, space commercialization and the science of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP).

1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
