Highlights

This programme aims to develop an appreciation of the complex interplay between the media and urban areas in contemporary world. City imaging is nowadays supplemented and constructed by exposure to visual media rather than by direct sense experience of urban realms. The examination of how the media enhance individuals to mentally organise their own sensory experience of cities is thus the focus of the programme. Through evaluation of concepts and skills in the representation of cityscapes, the process of constructing written and visually-based narratives about the potential of places will be discussed.

Teaching Mode

Lecture (24 hours):

As a critique-based programme, a lecture-preview reading assignment is given for each lecture. It consists of a small portion of the reading that will serve as a quick yet crucial introduction to the lecture. Students are required to do the reading before the lecture.

Tutorial Discussions (9 hours):

Tutorials will be held to allow students to discuss and to interact with the materials covered in the lectures in more depth. Students will also be required to participate in group activities and presentations to encourage their own critical thinking and engagement with the issues encountered in the course. Students will have to do assigned readings for tutorial discussion and presentations.

Workshops (3 hours):

3 practical workshops will be provided to equip students with the necessary hands-on skills in using media technologies. Students are expected to further familiarise themselves with the required media tools when they produce their project (e.g. a photoblog), which requires students to do extensive individual research after class.
