Highlights

Postgraduate Certificate in Integrative Medicine (Pain Management) is an online programme. It aims to enable students from different regions to study the pain management related theories, diagnosis, and treatment by both Chinese and western medicine through e-learning, and to understand the role of integrative pain management from Chinese and western medicine perspectives.
 
Programme Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme, students should be able to
 
1.     Evaluate western medicine’s perspective on pain physiology and pathology, pain management, application of medicine and nonpharmacological management;

2.     Evaluate Chinese medicine’s perspective and theories on pain causes, and how it treats acute and chronic pain;

3.     Analyse the diagnosis and management of common clinical pain disorders in both Chinese and western medicine;

4.     Assess the prospects of collaboration in pain management between Chinese and western medicine.

Programme Details

All lectures are conducted online via the platform. Three hours pre-recorded lectures every week. Students can attend the lectures anytime that suit the schedule. However student must complete lectures of a module by a specific date.
 
Students are required to go through the video lectures, complete all activities and assessments before proceeding to the next module.
 
Module 1: Clinical Basis in Western Medicine
The module aims to explain the Western medicine’s perspective on pain physiology and pathology, pain management, application of medicine and nonpharmacological management.
 
Module 2: Pain from Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective
The module aims to explain the Chinese medicine’s perspective and theories on pain causes, and how it treats acute and chronic pain.
 
Module 3: Pain Disorders: Diagnosis and Management
The module aims to explain and analyse the diagnosis and management of common clinical pain disorders in both Chinese and Western Medicine.
 
Module 4: Pain in Integrative Medicine
The module aims to explain the differences of pain management in Chinese and Western medicine, and it also analyses the advantages and prospects of collaboration in pain management between Chinese and Western medicine.
 
 
Overall assessment methods:
 
Quiz and reflection questions: Ten quizzes and two to three reflection questions will be posted online for students to complete on a weekly basis upon attending each online lecture.
 
Reading: Topics/journals/literatures will be posted online weekly for students to self-study.
 
Discussion: Students need to participate in online discussion every week, including expressing personal opinions, sharing experiences, raising questions, and exchanging opinions with tutors and classmates. Students can send questions to the platform and the on-duty tutor will read and answer the questions daily. Real-time discussions will only be conducted among students or between students and tutors if they can be online at the same time.
 
Examination: Four one-hour online examinations
 
Upon successful completion of the programme with 70% minimum attendance rate, and pass the assessments of all modules, students will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Integrative Medicine (Pain Management) within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised relevant bachelor's degree in Western medicine, Chinese medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacology, or clinical psychology.

If the degree or equivalent qualification is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English, applicants should provide evidence of English proficiency such as one of the following:

i.      An overall band of 6.0 or above with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or

ii.     A score of 550 or above in the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 213 or above in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 or above in the internet-based TOEFL; or

iii.    HKALE Use of English at Grade E or above; or

iv.     HKDSE English Language at Level 2 or above; or

v.      Equivalent qualifications.

Partner Details

Established in 2006, the Hong Kong Pain Society (HKPS) is a multidisciplinary society with representations from different medical specialties and healthcare disciplines, including western medical practitioners, dentists, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, medical social workers and scientists. The HKPS aims to promote - 

  1. exchanges of knowledge and collaboration among different Specialty Groups[1] who are interested in the research and management of pain;
  2. training and continued education in the field of pain medicine;
  3. public education and knowledge of pain and its management;
  4. research in the science, practice and development of techniques and technologies related to pain medicine; and
  5. to advise relevant regional agencies and organizations on the advances of pain medicine.
