A member of the Bloomsbury Group, Virginia Woolf was one of the twentieth-century writers who did not conform to the prevalent way of writing fiction. Opposed to the linearity and excessive surface details of the realist novel, Woolf introduced innovative narrative techniques and literary devices that have revolutionized the fictional genre into the modernist novel. With the change in form, Woolf’s modernist writings embraced new themes in the controversial areas of gender, feminism, and sexuality. This course aims to introduce to students the works of Virginia Woolf, and explore her contributions to modernism and feminism.
