The study of wars and rebellions in the Qing dynasty is important for students to explore how China during the nineteenth century was invaded and humiliated by foreign powers and how dynastic decline resulted in the downfall of the Qing regime. This programme aims at studying the dynamics of wars and rebellions in China under the Qing dynasty, focusing on the causes, the processes, impacts and the implications of these wars and rebellions from a historical perspective. The military dynamics of wars and rebellions and their political consequences on the Qing dynasty will be discussed.

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

1. discuss the causes of wars and rebellions in the Qing dynasty, including the Opium Wars, Taiping Rebellion, the first Sino-Japanese War and the Boxer Rebellion;
2. analyze the impacts of wars and rebellions on the legitimacy and governance of the Qing dynasty;
3. explain the roles of foreign powers in the wars and rebellions of the Qing dynasty;
4. explore the dynamics of wars and rebellions in China under the Qing dynasty, focusing on the causes, processes and impacts.

Syllabus

(1) The causes, process and impacts of the Opium War (1839-1842)
-      the roles of the Canton trade and the business community (foreign and local)
-      the roles of foreign and British traders
-      the roles played by Commissioner Lin Zexu and his forces of exterminating opium
-      the detailed battles (including the size of the army, the routes, the weapons use, the strategies, and the deaths incurred) involving the British military and the Qing army, and
-      the Treaty of Nanking leading to the ceding of Hong Kong Island to Britain

(2)The Opium War and Hong Kong: The resistance of people in the New Territories for ten days against the British military

(3) Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864) from its causes, rapid rise to the capture of capital Tianjing, the internal strife among the leaders of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the eventual defeat of Tianjing by the Qing military

(4) The Second Opium War, 1856-1860 – an important war between British and French alliance and China leading to the ceding of part of the Kowloon Peninsula to Britain

(5) The Sino-French War, 1884-1885: the causes and Impacts of the war

(6) The first Sino-Japanese War, 1894-1895: causes, process and impacts
-      the Treaty of Shimonoseki
-      the reasons for the failure of the Qing Peiyang navy and its military

(7)   The Boxer Rebellion – the causes and impacts on the Qing dynasty

Assessment

Individual assessment (1) oral presentation of the draft report and analysis in class (30-minutes plus 15-minute Q&A session); (2) 1,000-1,200 words written report and analysis of any war or rebellion; (3) Participation in discussion at war sites

Award

Students who have successfully completed the programme with at least 70% attendance will be awarded  “ Certificate for Module (Wars and Rebellions in Late Qing Dynasty)” within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.

Applicants shall hold a bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognized institution.

If the degree is from an institution where the language of teaching and assessment is not English, applicants shall provide evidence of English proficiency, such as:

i. an overall band of 6.0 with no subtests lower than 5.5 in the IELTS; or

ii. a score of 550 in the paper-based TOEFL, or a score of 213 in the computer-based TOEFL, or a score of 80 in the internet-based TOEFL; or

iii. HKALE Use of English at Grade E; or

iv. HKDSE Examination English Language at Level 3; or

v. equivalent qualifications.

Payment Method

Cash or EPS are accepted at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque or bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please write the programme title(s)  and the applicant’s name on the back of the cheque. 

3. VISA/MasterCard

Course applicants, who are alumni and holders of HKU SPACE Mastercard, may enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses of HK$2,000 and over. For enquiries, please contact our enrolment centres.

Notes

1. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or Mastercard if the course is to start shortly.
2. Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, cheque or online PPS will be reimbursed by a cheque; fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to credit card account used for payment.
