Ms Liang Weichun

Ms Liang Weichun has many years of experience teaching Putonghua. She teaches various Putnghua-related courses such as PSC pre-test training courses and Putonghua certificate courses at the HKU SPACE. Ms. Liang has taught at the Employees Retraining Board, The Cultural and Educational Association of the New Towns. She actively participates in social service activities to promote Putonghua and has served as the chief judge of the Chinese Language Festival Pinyin category and the chairman of the judging committee for Putonghua Public Speaking Competition for Primary and Secondary Schools organized by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) for many years, and provided PSC training for the winners of the competition.

Twenty-seven years after Hong Kong’s return to China, Putonghua, as the national language, has been actively promoted. Despite strong enthusiasm for learning Mandarin, the differences between Cantonese and Putonghua have resulted in the persistent label of ‘Hong Kong Putonghua’ (‘港普’) among many people in Hong Kong. This label even intimidates some people, affecting their confidence in learning Mandarin. This talk specifically addresses the challenges faced by Hong Kong residents in learning Putonghua, identifies common mistakes and provides practical solutions.
