On 19 April 2024, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) released a new ESG Code, aligned with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), which will take effect on 1 January 2025. These developments aim to enhance climate-related disclosures and support the HKSAR Government’s sustainability vision.
As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, insurers are facing significant climate-related losses, leading to rising premiums. Meanwhile, the real estate sector is experiencing increased risks, including asset devaluation and stranded or brown assets. Developers and property managers must proactively identify and manage physical and transition climate risks. Buildings contribute approximately one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions and account for over 50% of energy consumption in Hong Kong.
By adopting ESG strategies, businesses can improve operational resilience, boost asset value, enhance brand reputation, and gain access to green finance.
