Certificate for Module (Jungian Sandplay Therapy: A Non-verbal Expressive Modality of Therapy)

In many forms of psychotherapy, spoken language is the main channel through which clients express their inner world. Yet for many people—such as children, individuals with special educational needs, and some elderly clients—speech may be limited, overwhelming, or simply not their most natural way of communicating. In these situations, non-verbal expression becomes especially important.

Sandplay Therapy, developed by Jungian psychologist Dora M. Kalff and grounded in the theories of C. G. Jung, offers a safe, protected space where clients use sand, miniature figures, and a sandtray to “tell their story” without relying solely on words. By creating and exploring images in the sand, clients can symbolically express trauma, emotions, and inner conflicts, while the therapist witnesses and accompanies this process with deep empathy.

In this talk, clinical psychologist Dr  Ruby Mui and senior psychotherapist Ms Jennifer Wong will introduce the core principles of Sandplay Therapy and discuss its unique benefits for clients who struggle to express themselves verbally. They will share clinical examples, highlight how non-verbal play can foster healing and integration, and explore how sandplay can complement other therapeutic approaches in work with children, adults, and diverse client groups.
