Highlights

This programme aims to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of funeral floral design, exploring European and Chinese funeral cultures, religious backgrounds, and aesthetic preferences. Students will learn the design principles and production techniques for various types of funeral floral arrangements, including casket sprays, funeral parlor decorations, and related floral artworks. Additionally, the programme integrates the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and green funeral concepts into design and presentation.
 

On completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. elaborate on the historical evolution, religious beliefs, and cultural backgrounds of European and Chinese funerals, and explain their impact on the development of funeral formats and floral design;
  2. compare the differences between European and Chinese funeral floral design in terms of color palettes, styles, types, symbolic shapes, and related taboos;
  3. communicate appropriately with the bereaved families by utilising professional funeral floral terminology, integrated with relevant cultural knowledge and emotional support functions;
  4. apply sustainable and eco-friendly materials in funeral floral creations; and
  5. complete various types of funeral floral arrangements by applying different design principles and techniques, and utilise artificial intelligence (AI) to generate virtual scenes of funeral parlors or ceremonies.

Syllabus

I.  Culture and History of Funeral Floral Design

  • Historical evolution and cultural backgrounds of European and Chinese funerals
  • Influence of religious beliefs and folk customs on funeral rituals and floral design practices
  • Developments and trends in contemporary funeral floral design

II.  Comparative Study of European and Chinese Funeral Floral Design

  • Comparison of colour palettes, selection of floral materials, and symbolic meanings
  • Differences in floral styles, shapes, and related cultural taboos
  • Emotional function of floral design and its role in providing psychological comfort to mourners

III.  Design Principles and Techniques of Funeral Floral Arts

  • Design principles for various types of floral works (e.g., casket sprays, flower baskets, urn decorations, and wreaths)
  • Core production techniques, including gluing, binding, and weaving
  • Methods for preserving floral materials, and the fabrication and application of display stands

IV.  Sustainability and Eco-friendly Practices

  • Integration of green burial concepts with floral design
  • Selection and application of sustainable and eco-friendly materials
  • Designing floral arrangements that incorporate environmental considerations

V.  Designing floral arrangements that incorporate environmental considerations V. Professional Practice and Innovative Applications

Examination

Individual Floral Artwork and Presentation: students are required to create a designated funeral floral arrangement within 120 minutes, which includes a 5-minute oral presentation.

Examination

Written Test: students are required to utilise AI technology within 60 minutes to perform image synthesis and generate virtual funeral scenes based on a designated topic, in order to display images of two floral works in different styles. Within the time limit, students should also use AI technology to complete a written description that explains the design styles and aesthetic elements.

Award

Students who successfully pass* the programme are eligible for the "Certificate for Module (Funeral Floral Designs in Europe and China)" awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.

 *Passing the programme means students have to meet the following requirements:

  • Overall passing mark: 50%, and
  • Attendance Requirement: 70% of the total contact hours.

IMPORTANT Notes to Applicants:

  1. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first served basis. 
  2. ONLINE ENROLMENT IS PREFERRED.  You will need to submit/upload your supporting documents (such as the transcript or certificate) and provide identification proof (e.g., HKID, VISA). The course fees should only be paid after the Programme Team has confirmed your eligibility for enrollment through email.
  3. Should you enroll online within one week before the course starts, please contact the Programme Team as soon as possible. 
  4. Approximately one week before the course commencement, students will receive an email with all the details including a course schedule. All the course materials will be given in the first lesson. Students should attend the first session of the class at the specified time and place unless any change is made to the advertised details.
  5. The course will be confirmed only upon sufficient enrolment.
  6. Swapping between parallel groups (if any) is not allowed under any circumstances.
  7. No make-up classes will be offered for students’ absence.
  8. No refunds or transfers to a different class will be approved.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall:

(1) (a) (i) have gained in the HKDSE Examination Level 2 or above in five subjects including Chinese Language and English Language); and

      (ii) be a graduate or current student of an associate degree in art or design-related disciplines (e.g., graphic design, interior design, visual arts, etc.).

   or

   (b) (i) have gained in the HKCEE Grade E in three subjects, and Level 2* in Chinese Language and English Language; and

      (ii) be a graduate or current student of an associate degree in art or design-related disciplines (e.g., graphic design, interior design, visual arts, etc.)..

and

(2) hold a floral design certificate, such as European Floral Design (EFA) / Dutch Floral Design (DFA) / American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) / Sogetsu Certificate / Ikenobo Certificate.

 

Applicants with equivalent qualifications and relevant experience will be considered on individual merit. Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

* With effect from 2007, HKU SPACE recognises Grade E previously awarded for Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) (Grade C in the case of English Language (Syllabus A)) at HKCEE as an acceptable alternative to Level 2 in these two subjects at HKCEE.

Payment Method
1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. For enquiries, please contact our staff at any enrolment centres.

4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
