The programme examines the benefits and challenges of artificial intelligence (AI) in translation, including its impacts on the quality of translations, the role of human translators, and the potential ethical issues. It will also explore how AI can be used to improve the efficiency and accuracy of translation through machine learning algorithms and natural language processing techniques. Students will learn to collaborate with AI to provide translation for a variety of text types, including general documents, marketing materials, and literary texts.
 

Syllabus / 課程大綱 Introduction to AI and translation Benefits and challenges of AI in translation The role of human translators in the age of AI Machine learning algorithms for translation: case studies of successful machine learning projects for translation Natural language processing (NLP) techniques: tokenization, text classification, keyword extraction and sentiment analysis Best practices for designing user-friendly programmes that combine the strengths of AI and human intelligence Ethical considerations in AI translation: privacy concerns and legal considerations Emerging trends in AI and their potential impacts on the translation industry

Learning Outcomes / 學習成果 On completion of the programme, students should be able to: Explain the benefits and challenges of AI in translation, including its impact on the quality of translation and the role of human translators; Evaluate different types of translation output by AI, focusing on how accurately it understands the nuances of language and culture in different text types; Analyse how machine learning algorithms and natural language processing techniques improve the efficiency and accuracy of translation in general; and Determine the faithfulness, effectiveness and appropriateness of AI generated translations against the original text.

Assessment and Award / 評核及學銜 A "Certificate for Module (Translation and Artificial Intelligence)" will be awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE to students who have satisfied the following criteria: achieve at least 80% attendance of the programme; and pass all the assessments Type of Assessment Description Weighting Continuous assessment Two short translation assignments (using AI) of 500 words each 50% Continuous assessment One academic essay (evaluating the use of AI in translation) of 1,000 – 1,200 words 50%     Total :  100%

1. hold a bachelor’s degree awarded by a recognised university; and

2. pass a one-hour language competency test*.

*Applicants who have obtained the following qualifications as proof of their proficiency in English and Chinese will be exempted from the language competence test:

i)        HKDSE Examination English and Chinese Language at Level 4 or above; or

ii)       HKALE Use of English and Chinese Language and Culture at Grade D or above; or

iii)      equivalent qualifications.

Those who do not meet the standard set of criteria for admission will be considered on individual merit.

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and the applicant’s name.. You may either:

• bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
• or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying  “Course Application” on the envelope.  HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment sent by mail.

3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself.
