Highlights

The programme aims to:

  • Introduce students to simple phrases and sentences used in basic conversation, e.g.: introducing oneself, greeting, reserving a hotel room, ordering food and drink, talking about your job, finding your way around town, talking about likes and dislikes and holidays.
  • Give students the basic grammar and vocabulary needed for simple communication, e.g. present tense forms, adjectives, articles, basic modal verbs, and prepositions of place.
  • Provide students with the techniques needed to listen with confidence to simplified, everyday dialogues when spoken clearly and slowly.
  • Introduce students to some areas of Swedish culture such as food and drink, greetings, festivals and places.
  • Enable students to extract information from very simple written texts such as forms, menus and short, simplified articles, and to write short simple emails or messages and fill in information on a form, e.g. hotel registration form.
On completion of the programme, students should be able to:
  1. in speaking, use simple words and phrases to handle basic situations when travelling.
  2. in writing, produce very short simple texts, e.g. postcards, short emails, smartphone messages, or form filling.
  3. in listening, grasp the key ideas from very simple conversations when the language is slow and clear.
  4. in reading, extract key ideas from menus, forms and short, simplified texts on everyday topics.

Programme Details

Syllabus

Greetings: saying hello, giving one’s nationality, talking about where we live, basic pronunciation, simple present tense.
Travel: booking a hotel room, a trip around Sweden, form filling, spelling one’s name, questions, negatives in present tense, reading and writing a postcard, pronunciation å, ä, and ö.
Dining out: vocabulary of cafes and restaurants, ordering food, numbers and prices, definite and indefinite articles, pronunciation of difficult sounds, reading a menu, reading about restaurant culture in Sweden.
Jobs: vocabulary of jobs, interviewing about work, adjectives to describe work, verb "do / make", class survey on work, weekly routines, modal verbs "can" and "have to", question words.
Around town: Asking for and giving directions around town, telling the time, prepositions of place, vocabulary of shops and places in town.
Past time: language of free time activities, past tense to ask about weekend activities, reading and writing short emails and letters, vocabulary of family members and festivals, possessive pronouns, reading about festivals in Sweden.
Shopping: vocabulary of clothes and colours, conversation in a shop, vocabulary of different shops, shopping in the Swedish culture, expressions of quantity and containers e.g. a can of, a box of etc, Swedish currency, personal pronouns.
Holidays: places to visit, holiday activities, months, reflexive verbs, place and date.

Assessment

Course participants' progress is measured through a number of assessment components including:

  • A mid-course progress test
  • A final test
  • Oral work – continuous assessment
  • A final oral test
Award

Students who successfully pass* the programme are eligible for the "Certificate in Swedish (Introductory)" awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE.

 *Passing the programme means students have to meet the following requirements:

  • Overall passing mark: 50%, and
  • Attendance Requirement: 70% of the total contact hours.

Entry Requirements

Applicants shall have:

(a) no previous or little knowledge of Swedish,

and

(b) sufficient English proficiency to follow simple explanations in English.

 

IMPORTANT Notes to Applicants:

  1. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first served basis.
  2. Applicants are normally required to provide information from their HKID card (for local applicants) or passport (for non-local applicants) for admission assessment and student records purposes. Applicants to award-bearing programmes will also be asked to present their HKID/passport for verification if applying in person at enrolment counters or to attach a copy of their HKID or passport if applying by post. 
  3. To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong as dependants and non-local applicants issued with a valid employment visa.   4. Online enrolment is preferred. The online application is completed when you see the payment confirmation, which will be sent to your email address by the system. If you need the official receipt, please obtain it at one of our enrolment centres with the payment confirmation.
  5. Please check if you have enrolled in the right course by comparing the application code with the information on our website.
  6. Should you enroll online within one week before the course starts, please contact the Programme Team as soon as possible. Students should attend the first session of the class at the specified time and place unless any change is made to the advertised details. 
  7. Approximately one week before the course, students will receive an email with a detailed course schedule and a book list, with which students can enjoy a discount when purchasing the course books. All the other course materials will be given in the first lesson.
  8. The course will be confirmed only upon sufficient enrolment.
  9. No refunds or transfers to a different class/ course will be approved.
  10. No make-up classes will be offered for students’ absence.

Continuing Education Fund

This Certificate Programme is registered with the Office of the Continuing Education Fund (OCEF) as CEF-reimbursable, which qualifies for students to receive a refund of 80% (first HK$10,000) or 60% (remaining HK$15,000) of course and examination fees.  

In order to qualify for the CEF, you must: 

  • pass the course in terms of performance, scoring at least 50% of the marks;  
  • attend 70% of the lessons; 
  • submit your claims within one year upon the successful completion of the course.

Payment Method
1. Cash, EPS, WeChat Pay Or Alipay

Course fees can be paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay or Alipay at any HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres.

2. Cheque Or Bank draft

Course fees can also be paid by crossed cheque or bank draft made payable to “HKU SPACE”. Please specify the programme title(s) for application and applicant’s name. You may either:

  • bring the completed form(s), together with the appropriate course or application fees in the form of a cheque, and any required supporting documents to any of the HKU SPACE enrolment centres;
  • or mail the above documents to any of the HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres, specifying “Course Application” on the envelope. HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of personal information and payment sent by mail.
3. VISA/Mastercard

Applicants may also pay the course fee by VISA or Mastercard, including the “HKU SPACE Mastercard”, at any HKU SPACE enrolment centres. Holders of the HKU SPACE Mastercard can enjoy a 10-month interest-free instalment period for courses with a tuition fee worth a minimum of HK$2,000; however, the course applicant must also be the cardholder himself/herself. 4. Online Payment

Online application / enrolment is offered for most open admission courses (enrolled on first come, first served basis) and selected award-bearing programmes. Application fees and course fees of these programmes/courses can be settled by using "PPS by Internet" (not available via mobile phones), VISA or Mastercard. In addition to the aforesaid online payment channels, new and continuing students of award-bearing programmes with available online service, they may also pay their course fees by Online WeChat Pay, Online Alipay or Faster Payment System (FPS). Please refer to Enrolment Methods - Online Enrolment  for details.

Notes

  • If the programme/course is starting within five working days, application by post is not recommended to avoid any delays. Applicants are advised to enrol in person at HKU SPACE Enrolment Centres and avoid making cheque payment under this circumstance.

  • Fees paid are not refundable except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment), subject to the School’s discretion. In exceptional cases where a refund is approved, fees paid by cash, EPS, WeChat Pay, Alipay, cheque, FPS or PPS by Internet will be reimbursed by a cheque, and fees paid by credit card will be reimbursed to the credit card account used for payment. 

  • In addition to the published fees, there may be additional costs associated with individual programmes. Please refer to the relevant course brochures or direct any enquiries to the relevant programme team for details.
  • Fees and places on courses cannot be transferrable from one applicant to another. Once accepted onto a course, the student may not change to another course without approval from HKU SPACE. A processing fee of HK$120 will be levied on each approved transfer.
  • HKU SPACE will not be responsible for any loss of payment, receipt, or personal information sent by mail.
  • For payment certification, please submit a completed form, a sufficiently stamped and self-addressed envelope, and a crossed cheque for HK$30 per copy made payable to “HKU SPACE” to any of our enrolment centres.
